React to others misjudging Jesus' role?
How should we respond when others misinterpret Jesus' role in our lives?

The Setting: Misinterpretations in Mark 6:14

“King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, ‘John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in Him.’ ” (Mark 6:14)

• Even in His own day, people drew wrong conclusions about who Jesus was.

• Their speculation (“John the Baptist,” “Elijah,” vv. 15–16) shows how easily public opinion can cloud truth.

• When friends, family, or culture today cast Jesus in a role that fits their preferences—moral teacher, political activist, mystical figure—we face the same challenge the disciples faced: how to respond faithfully and clearly.

Respond by Confidently Proclaiming His True Identity

• Keep the conversation centered on who Scripture says He is: “I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2)

• Point to His own words: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

• Remember our aim: “We do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord.” (2 Corinthians 4:5)

Respond by Clarifying with Scripture

• Let the Bible speak for itself; it carries authority we do not: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

• Share passages that correct specific misunderstandings (e.g., Colossians 1:15-20 for His deity; Hebrews 1:1-3 for His superiority to prophets).

• Trust God’s promise: “My word… will not return to Me empty.” (Isaiah 55:11)

Respond by Living Out His Lordship

• Actions authenticate words: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

• A consistently obedient life shows that Jesus is more than an idea; He is our Lord (Luke 6:46).

• When others see fruit—love, joy, peace—they gain a clearer picture of His true role (Galatians 5:22-23).

Respond with Humility and Patience

• “A servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone… gently instructing those who oppose.” (2 Timothy 2:24-25)

• Gentleness and respect open doors that arguments slam shut (1 Peter 3:15).

• Remember our own journey; we once needed correction too (Titus 3:2-5).

Respond by Entrusting the Outcome to God

• We can plant and water, but “God caused it to grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7)

• Pray privately for those who misunderstand, asking the Spirit to unveil Christ to them (2 Corinthians 4:4-6).

• Rest in His sovereignty—He draws people in His timing (John 6:44).

Putting It All Together

• Speak up: confidently name Jesus as Lord and Savior.

• Show up: let transformed conduct reinforce your words.

• Stay calm: correct gently, answer questions graciously (Colossians 4:6).

• Step back: trust God to use His Word and your witness to reveal the real Jesus.
