How can we respond to ridicule for our faith, inspired by Matthew 27:43? Setting the Scene “ ‘He trusts in God; let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, “I am the Son of God.” ’” (Matthew 27:43) At Calvary, onlookers hurled these cutting words at the crucified Lord. They aimed to belittle His identity, question His relationship with the Father, and undermine His mission. When believers face ridicule today, the pattern is the same—but so is the pathway to victory. Recognizing the Pattern of Ridicule - Doubt is cast on God’s care: “let God deliver Him now if He wants Him.” - Our identity in Christ is challenged: “He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” - Suffering is twisted into proof of failure. Knowing that the Lord Himself endured these attacks keeps us from surprise or despair (2 Timothy 3:12). Learning from Jesus’ Response - He remained silent before His mockers (Isaiah 53:7). - He entrusted Himself “to Him who judges justly” (1 Peter 2:23). - He stayed focused on completing the Father’s will (John 19:30). Practical Ways We Can Respond Today 1. Expect opposition • Jesus prepared us: “Blessed are you when people insult you… because of Me” (Matthew 5:11–12). 2. Refuse retaliation • “Do not repay anyone evil for evil” (Romans 12:17). • A gentle answer diffuses tension (Proverbs 15:1). 3. Keep doing good • “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). 4. Speak truth with grace • “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6). 5. Entrust vindication to God • “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord” (Romans 12:19). 6. Rejoice in shared suffering • “If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed” (1 Peter 4:14). 7. Anchor your identity in Christ • Nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38–39). Promises to Remember When Mocked - God sees and rewards steadfast faith (Hebrews 6:10). - The Spirit strengthens and speaks through us (Luke 12:11–12). - Future glory far outweighs present ridicule (2 Corinthians 4:17). Encouragement for the Journey Ridicule may sting, but it cannot nullify what Christ accomplished or who you are in Him. Stand firm, answer with grace, and let your unwavering trust point mockers to the Savior who once hung on a cross—and now reigns forever. |
