Seeking God's guidance, not like Ahab?
How should we seek God's guidance in decisions, unlike Ahab in 1 Kings 22:30?

Setting the Scene

“Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ‘I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you put on your royal attire.’ So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.” (1 Kings 22:30)

Ahab had already heard God’s warning through the prophet Micaiah (vv. 17–28) yet tried to outmaneuver the word of the Lord by going incognito. His plan failed; God’s decree stood (vv. 34–38).

Lessons from Ahab’s Misguided Approach

• He heard God’s word but did not submit to it.

• He sought to manipulate circumstances instead of obeying.

• He trusted human strategy over divine sovereignty.

• He dragged another believer (Jehoshaphat) into his compromise.

Steps for Seeking God’s Guidance Today

1. Receive God’s Word with an Obedient Heart

Psalm 119:105 — “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

James 1:22 — “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

2. Pray with Surrender, Not Agenda

Proverbs 3:5-6 — “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Philippians 4:6-7 — Bring requests with thanksgiving, letting His peace guard your heart.

3. Seek Godly Counsel, Not Echo Chambers

Proverbs 11:14 — “Where there is no guidance, a people fall, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

• Ahab gathered 400 prophets who told him what he wanted to hear (1 Kings 22:6); we must welcome honest, Scripture-based counsel.

4. Wait Patiently for Clear Direction

Psalm 27:14 — “Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the LORD!”

Isaiah 30:21 — “Your ears will hear this command behind you: ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

5. Align Plans with God’s Character and Mission

Micah 6:8 — “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God?”

Matthew 6:33 — “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Scriptures That Illuminate the Process

Romans 12:2 — “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

John 10:27 — “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”

Psalm 32:8 — “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you.”

Following these steps keeps us from Ahab’s path of self-reliance and positions us to move forward in humble, confident obedience to God’s unfailing guidance.
