How can we discern genuine miracles from false signs in today's world? Miracles Then and Now “God did extraordinary miracles through the hands of Paul.” (Acts 19:11) • The same God who worked through Paul is unchanged (Hebrews 13:8). • Miracles served to affirm the gospel message (Mark 16:20). • Satan also imitates the supernatural to mislead (2 Thessalonians 2:9–10). Clear Marks of a Genuine Miracle • Exalts Jesus alone—never the messenger (John 16:14). • Aligns fully with Scripture; never contradicts God’s written word (Galatians 1:8). • Produces lasting fruit of repentance, faith, and holiness (Matthew 7:16–18). • Accompanied by humility, not self-promotion (Acts 3:12). • Advances the true gospel rather than adding secret knowledge or new doctrines (Jude 3). Red Flags Signaling a False Sign • Message departs from biblical truth, even if the wonder “works” (Deuteronomy 13:1–3). • Draws attention, power, or money toward a person or movement (Acts 8:18–23). • Encourages disobedience, moral compromise, or occult practices (Isaiah 8:19–20). • Employs manipulation, showmanship, or unverifiable claims (2 Peter 2:1–3). • Produces fear, confusion, or bondage instead of peace in Christ (2 Timothy 1:7). Scriptural Tests for Discernment 1. Test the spirits (1 John 4:1). 2. Compare every teaching with the whole counsel of God (Acts 17:11). 3. Examine the fruit over time (James 3:17). 4. Seek confirmation from mature, biblically grounded believers (Proverbs 11:14). 5. Hold fast to what is good; reject every form of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:21–22). Walking in Confidence • God still grants authentic signs according to His sovereign will (1 Corinthians 12:7–11). • The written Word remains the ultimate standard—miracles confirm but never replace it. • Stay rooted in Christ, guided by the Spirit, and you can rejoice when God moves while safely spotting the counterfeit (Matthew 24:24; Psalm 119:105). |
