Spotting false leaders in church today?
How can we discern and avoid false shepherds in today's church?

Shepherding a Flock Doomed to Slaughter (Zechariah 11:4)

“ This is what the LORD my God says: ‘Shepherd the flock doomed to slaughter.’ ”

• In Zechariah’s day the LORD commands the prophet to step into the role of a shepherd for a flock already marked for destruction—a vivid picture of Israel under corrupt leaders.

• The verse exposes a heartbreaking reality: when shepherds fail, sheep perish. The warning still rings today whenever leaders exploit, neglect, or mislead God’s people.

Why We Must Discern False Shepherds

Matthew 7:15 — “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing.”

Acts 20:28-30 — Paul foresees “savage wolves” arising from inside the church.

2 Peter 2:1-3 — false teachers “secretly introduce destructive heresies.”

The stakes are eternal; deceived sheep can wander into spiritual ruin.

Recognizing Their Marks

False shepherds…

• Feed themselves, not the flock (Ezekiel 34:2-3).

• Merchandise the gospel for greed (2 Peter 2:3).

• Deny or dilute essential truths—Christ’s deity, atonement, resurrection (1 John 2:22-23).

• Exhibit immoral lifestyles or justify sin (Jude 4).

• Despise accountability, resisting correction (3 John 9-10).

• Draw disciples after themselves instead of pointing to Christ (Acts 20:30).

Four Reliable Tests

1. Scripture Test

Acts 17:11—search the Scriptures daily.

• If teaching contradicts the clear, literal sense of God’s Word, reject it.

2. Christ-Exalting Test

John 16:14—Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus.

• Does the shepherd magnify Christ or himself?

3. Fruit Test

Matthew 7:16—“By their fruit you will recognize them.”

• Look for love, holiness, humility (Galatians 5:22-23).

4. Doctrine-and-Life Consistency Test

1 Timothy 4:16—“Watch your life and doctrine closely.”

• Sound teaching should align with godly living.

Following the True Shepherd

John 10:11—Jesus is “the good shepherd” who lays down His life for the sheep.

Psalm 23—He provides, guides, protects.

1 Peter 2:25—We return to “the Shepherd and Overseer” of our souls.

Practical Steps for Staying Safe

• Stay planted in a Bible-preaching fellowship (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Cultivate personal Bible reading; measure every sermon against the text.

• Invite mature believers to speak into your life; isolation breeds deception.

• Pray for discernment (James 1:5) and for faithful pastors (Ephesians 6:19).

• Support and honor true shepherds who labor rightly in the Word (1 Timothy 5:17-18).

• If a leader proves false and unrepentant, “come out from among them” (2 Corinthians 6:17) and find a flock led by men of proven integrity (Titus 1:5-9).

Standing Firm in Hope

False shepherds may abound, yet the Chief Shepherd will appear (1 Peter 5:4). Until then, cling to His voice, weigh every message by His Word, and walk together in truth and love.
