Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ?
This phrase addresses the issue of false teachings and the denial of Jesus as the Messiah. In the early church, there were various heretical groups, such as the Gnostics, who denied the incarnation and the divine nature of Jesus. The term "liar" is used to emphasize the gravity of denying Jesus' messianic role, aligning with the biblical theme that truth is found in Christ (John 14:6). The denial of Jesus as the Christ is a direct contradiction to the prophecies of the Old Testament, such as Isaiah 53, which foretold the coming of a suffering Messiah. This denial also undermines the foundational Christian belief in Jesus as the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan.

This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.
The term "antichrist" here is not necessarily referring to a single end-times figure but rather to anyone who opposes or denies the true nature of Christ. In the context of 1 John, the antichrist is a spirit of deception prevalent in the world, as mentioned in 1 John 4:3. Denying the Son is equivalent to denying the Father, as Jesus Himself stated in John 10:30, "I and the Father are one." This reflects the inseparable relationship between the Father and the Son, a core tenet of Trinitarian doctrine. The denial of this relationship is seen as a rejection of the entire Christian faith, as it negates the work of salvation accomplished through Jesus. The early church faced many challenges from those who sought to distort the truth of the gospel, and this passage serves as a warning to remain vigilant against such false teachings.

Persons / Places / Events
1. John the Apostle
The author of 1 John, one of Jesus' original twelve disciples, known for his close relationship with Jesus and his emphasis on love and truth in his writings.

2. Jesus Christ
Central figure of Christianity, whose identity as the Messiah is affirmed in this verse. Denial of His messianic role is equated with falsehood.

3. Antichrist
A term used to describe those who deny Jesus as the Christ. It represents opposition to Christ and His teachings.

4. Father and Son
Refers to God the Father and Jesus Christ, emphasizing the relationship and unity between them, which is denied by the antichrist.

5. Early Christian Community

Teaching Points
The Importance of Christ's Identity
Understanding and affirming Jesus as the Christ is central to Christian faith. Denial of this truth is equated with falsehood and opposition to God.

Recognizing False Teachings
Believers must be vigilant against teachings that deny the core truths of Christianity, particularly the divinity and messianic role of Jesus.

Unity of the Father and the Son
The relationship between the Father and the Son is integral to Christian doctrine. Denying this relationship is a hallmark of antichrist teachings.

Guarding Against Deception
Christians are called to discern truth from error, relying on Scripture and the Holy Spirit to guide them in recognizing and rejecting falsehoods.

Confession and Witness
Publicly confessing Jesus as the Christ is a vital aspect of Christian witness, and believers are encouraged to stand firm in this confession.Verse 22. - Who is the liar, but he that denieth, etc.? From the lie St. John passes on to the utterer of it. "Ye readily distinguish any lie from the truth. Who, then, is the liar?" "The liar" does not mean the liar κατ ἐξοχήν, as if this denial constituted the very acme of falsehood. To deny the very existence of God is surely a worse lie. Still less can we say that "the context leaves no doubt that 'the liar' is the same with 'the antichrist.'" The article ὁ ψεύστης refers to the preceding ψεῦδος, just as in 1 John 5:4, 5 ὁ νικῶν refers to the preceding νίκη. The very form of sentence is the same: τίς ἐστιν ὁ νικῶν... εἰ μὴ ὁ κ.τ.λ. and there ὁ νικῶν cannot mean the victor, κατ ἐξοχήν, who is Christ, and not the believer. So that the Authorized Version is not so very inaccurate in rendering ὁ ψεύστης "a liar." "Who tells lies, if not he who denies (and says) that Jesus is not the Christ?" This was the great Gnostic lie to which St. John's Gospel and Epistle give the answer. The antichrist is this, he who denieth the Father and the Son. "The antichrist" here is not the great adversary, but one having similar characteristics. He denies the Messiahship of Jesus, and thus virtually denies both the Father and Son (comp. 2 Thessalonians 2:4). This truth St. John proceeds to restate and develop.
