Spotting spiritual decline today?
How can we recognize signs of spiritual decline in our own lives today?

Setting the Scene

“Behold, the day is coming. Doom has gone out. The rod has blossomed; arrogance has budded.” (Ezekiel 7:10)

In Ezekiel’s vision, Israel’s sin has ripened like a flowering rod—what began as hidden roots has become visible, undeniable fruit. That same process can still unfold in a life today.

Ezekiel 7:10—A Snapshot of Decline

• “The rod has blossomed” – sin, once restrained, is now in full view.

• “Arrogance has budded” – pride stands tallest, crowning the decay.

• “Doom has gone out” – judgment is already set in motion; consequences follow the flowering.

Tracing the Symptoms in Our Hearts

1. Pride creeps in

Proverbs 16:18—“Pride goes before destruction.”

• When achievements or knowledge draw focus to self, the blossom of arrogance foretells deeper rot.

2. Dullness toward God’s Word

Hebrews 2:1—“We must pay more careful attention… so that we do not drift away.”

• Diminished hunger for Scripture signals drifting currents beneath still waters.

3. Tolerance of “small” sins

James 1:15—“When sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.”

• What we permit privately will blossom publicly if left unchecked.

4. Loss of first love

Revelation 2:4—“You have abandoned your first love.”

• Duty replaces delight; service turns mechanical, absent affection.

5. Waning prayer life

Luke 18:1—“They should always pray and not lose heart.”

• Sporadic, rushed prayers reveal a heart settling for distance from the Father.

6. Diminished fellowship

Hebrews 10:25—neglecting gathering leads to isolation, a hotbed for unchecked sin.

The Warning Lights on the Dashboard

• Frequent anger or irritability (Proverbs 14:17)

• Envy over others’ blessings (James 3:16)

• Secret habits gaining power (Ephesians 5:11)

• Cynicism toward spiritual things (1 Timothy 4:1–2)

• Justifying questionable entertainment or speech (Ephesians 4:29)

How Decline Takes Root

• Neglect → Drifting (Hebrews 2:1)

• Drifting → Hardening (Hebrews 3:13)

• Hardening → Blossoming Sin (Ezekiel 7:10)

• Blossoming Sin → Discipline or Judgment (Galatians 6:7)

Turning the Tide

• Immediate confession (1 John 1:9) breaks the blossoming cycle.

• Renewed submission to Scripture (Psalm 119:11) uproots arrogance.

• Intentional prayer rhythms (Colossians 4:2) soften a hardened heart.

• Honest accountability with mature believers (James 5:16) pulls hidden roots into the light.

• Consistent worship and fellowship (Psalm 122:1) realign affections toward God.

Spiritual decline can be recognized early; when the first bud of arrogance appears, heed Ezekiel’s warning, turn quickly, and let God’s grace restore the garden of the heart before the rod is in full bloom.
