Spotting true vs. fake humility?
How can we discern genuine humility from false humility in our faith journey?

Setting the Scene

“Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person is inflated without cause by his unspiritual mind.” (Colossians 2:18)

What Paul Is Warning Us About

• “False humility” looks pious but is fueled by pride.

• It often comes packaged with impressive experiences (“what he has seen”) and extra-biblical practices (“worship of angels”).

• The result? Believers may feel “disqualified,” unsure if their simple trust in Christ is enough.

Spotting False Humility

• Self-promotion in disguise

– Talks about “humility” yet craves recognition (Matthew 6:1-2).

• Rule-making beyond Scripture

– Adds man-made ascetic rules (Colossians 2:20-23).

• Mystical elitism

– Claims special visions or revelations to elevate oneself (Jude 1:8).

• Neglect of Christ’s sufficiency

– Draws attention away from “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).

Marks of Genuine Humility

• Christ-centered confidence

– Boasts only in the cross (Galatians 6:14).

• Servant-hearted actions

– “Regard others as more important than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3-4).

• Quiet obedience

– Obeys God even when no one sees (Matthew 6:3-4).

• Submissive to Scripture

– Receives the implanted word “with meekness” (James 1:21).

• Willingness to be taught

– “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” (1 Peter 5:5).

Practical Discernment Checklist

1. Motive: Am I drawing attention to Jesus or to myself?

2. Message: Does this teaching align with clear Scripture? (Acts 17:11)

3. Method: Is the focus on secret knowledge or on the gospel?

4. Manner: Does it produce love, joy, and peace—or superiority and fear? (Galatians 5:22-23)

5. Outcome: Are believers built up in Christ or burdened with extra rules?

Living It Out

• Stay rooted in the Head—Christ (Colossians 2:19).

• Celebrate God’s grace; reject spiritual one-upmanship (Ephesians 2:8-9).

• Daily choose the downward path of service, echoing Jesus who “humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—yes, death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8).
