Trusting God's justice amid evil?
How can we trust God's justice when facing evil, as in Psalm 58:9?

Understanding the Image in Psalm 58:9

“Before your pots can feel the burning thorns—whether green or burning—He will sweep them away.”

• “Pots” picture a meal being prepared; judgment arrives before the water can even warm.

• “Burning thorns” were desert fuel—quick to flare up, just as swiftly consumed.

• Whether the thorns are “green or burning” (half-dried or fully ablaze) the outcome is the same: God intervenes faster than the heat can be felt.

What This Teaches about God’s Justice

• Swift: Evil never outruns Him; judgment can fall in an instant.

• Certain: No circumstance (“green or burning”) alters the result.

• Comprehensive: Every form of wickedness is swept away, leaving no residue.

• Consistent with His character: “The Rock—His work is perfect, for all His ways are just.” (Deuteronomy 32:4)

Why We Can Trust Him When Evil Seems Unchecked

• God’s track record

– Flood judgment (Genesis 6–9)

– Pharaoh’s overthrow (Exodus 14:23–28)

– Cross and empty tomb: evil’s greatest scheme overturned (Acts 2:23–24)

• His promises

– “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay.” (Romans 12:19)

– “He has fixed a day when He will judge the world in righteousness.” (Acts 17:31)

• His patience is purposeful

– “The Lord is not slow… but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish.” (2 Peter 3:9)

How to Live While Waiting for His Justice

• Refuse personal revenge; leave room for His wrath (Romans 12:17-21).

• Keep praying for God’s righteous intervention (Psalm 94:1-3).

• Do good and resist evil in practical ways (Micah 6:8; Galatians 6:9-10).

• Strengthen hope with the certainty of future judgment (Revelation 6:9-11).

Encouragement to Hold Fast

• God’s justice may feel delayed, never denied.

• The same suddenness described in Psalm 58:9 guarantees the righting of every wrong at the appointed moment.

• Until then, faith clings to His unchanging word, confident that the Judge of all the earth will do right (Genesis 18:25).
