How can we apply the watchman's vigilance to our spiritual lives today? Standing on the Wall with David’s Watchman 2 Samuel 18:27 records: “The watchman said, ‘He appears to be running like Ahimaaz son of Zadok.’ ‘He is a good man,’ said the king. ‘He comes with good news.’” The scene is literal history—an alert sentry spots a lone runner and correctly identifies both the messenger and the value of his news. From that ancient wall, the Spirit still speaks about vigilance in daily discipleship. Why Watchfulness Still Matters • God calls believers to guard the flock and their own hearts (Proverbs 4:23; Acts 20:28). • Spiritual enemies remain real and active (1 Peter 5:8). • The Lord is coming and commands readiness (Mark 13:35-37). Traits of a Faithful Watchman 1. Clear Eyes • The watchman recognized Ahimaaz at a distance. • Keep vision sharp through regular, wholehearted Scripture intake (Psalm 119:105). 2. Quick Discernment • He knew Ahimaaz was “a good man.” • Evaluate teaching, trends, and temptations by the plumb line of truth (1 John 4:1; Hebrews 5:14). 3. Timely Reporting • He spoke up immediately to the king. • Sound warnings and encouragement promptly—silence gives the enemy room (Ezekiel 33:6-7). 4. Confidence in the Message • “He comes with good news.” • Share the gospel and God’s promises without hesitation (Romans 1:16). Practical Ways to Keep Watch Today • Personal Life – Start and end each day with focused time in the Word and prayer (Psalm 5:3; Matthew 26:41). – Guard media, conversations, and thoughts; filter everything through Philippians 4:8. • Family – Read Scripture aloud; discuss what God says about current challenges (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). – Model repentance and obedience so the next generation learns true vigilance. • Church – Serve where you can see and meet needs: usher, teach, visit, intercede (1 Thessalonians 5:14). – Hold leadership and doctrine to biblical standards; encourage and, when necessary, warn (Acts 20:31). • Community and Culture – Stay informed, but view events through a biblical lens, not fear (Isaiah 8:12-13). – Engage graciously, speaking truth in love and praying for revival (Colossians 4:5-6). Strength for the Long Watch • Depend on the Holy Spirit, who never slumbers (John 14:26). • Draw courage from saints who kept watch before us—Nehemiah’s builders (Nehemiah 4:9), Paul’s elders (Acts 20:31), faithful servants awaiting their Master (Luke 12:35-37). • Rest in Christ’s promise: “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds on watch” (Luke 12:37). The wall is high, the field wide, and the hour late, yet the good news still runs toward a waiting King. Keep eyes open, trumpet ready, and heart steady. |
