What does Psalm 37:28 mean?
What is the meaning of Psalm 37:28?

For the LORD loves justice

“For the LORD loves justice” (Psalm 37:28a) tells us straight away what delights God’s heart.

• He is “the Rock, whose work is perfect; all His ways are justice” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

• His throne is “established on righteousness and justice” (Psalm 89:14).

• Because God loves justice, He calls His people to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly” (Micah 6:8).

• When life seems unfair, remember Isaiah 61:8: “I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and iniquity.” God’s love of justice guarantees that wrongs will not be ignored forever.

and will not forsake His saints

The verse continues, “and will not forsake His saints.”

Psalm 94:14 echoes, “The LORD will not forsake His people; He will never abandon His inheritance.”

• He repeats this promise in Deuteronomy 31:6 and affirms it again in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you.”

• Jesus drives it home in John 10:28–29, declaring that no one can snatch His sheep out of His hand.

• This is not a temporary pledge; it is the unbreakable commitment of a covenant-keeping God.

They are preserved forever

“They are preserved forever.”

• God’s preservation is both present and eternal: “The LORD will guard your coming and going, both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:8).

• Peter celebrates an “inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4–5).

• Jude closes his letter praising “Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless” (Jude 24).

• Eternal security rests on God’s power, not on our performance (Philippians 1:6). He who saves also keeps.

but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off

The contrast is stark: “but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off.”

Psalm 34:16 warns, “The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.”

Proverbs 10:27 notes that “the years of the wicked are cut short.”

Malachi 4:1 pictures a day when the arrogant “will be set ablaze, leaving them neither root nor branch.”

Revelation 20:15 confirms the finality: anyone not found in the Book of Life is thrown into the lake of fire.

• God’s justice not only vindicates the righteous; it also brings a decisive end to unrepentant wickedness, cutting off every line of rebellion.

summary

Psalm 37:28 reassures believers that God’s heart delights in justice, His covenant love guarantees He will never abandon His people, and His power secures them forever. At the same time, it soberly warns that those who persist in wickedness face certain, final judgment. In one verse we see both the comforting faithfulness and the unwavering justice of the LORD—truths that invite the righteous to rest in His protection and urge the wicked to turn while there is still time.
