What does Romans 10:6 mean?
What is the meaning of Romans 10:6?

But the righteousness that is by faith says

“ But the righteousness that is by faith says:” (Romans 10:6a)

• Paul contrasts two kinds of righteousness (Romans 10:5–6). Moses showed the limits of law-keeping; only Christ fulfills the Law (Romans 8:3–4).

• Faith-righteousness is received, not earned. “The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” (Romans 3:22).

• This gift was foretold: “The righteous will live by faith” (Romans 1:17; Habakkuk 2:4).

• Because God declares us righteous in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21), our confidence rests in His finished work, not our performance.

Do not say in your heart

“ Do not say in your heart” (Romans 10:6b)

• Quoting Deuteronomy 9:4, Paul exposes self-reliance and silent doubt.

• Israel was warned not to credit their success to themselves; likewise, believers must resist inward pride (Luke 18:11-14).

• The gospel calls for humble trust: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Who will ascend into heaven?

“ ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (Romans 10:6c)

• Echoes Deuteronomy 30:12, where Moses told Israel God’s word was already near.

• Trying to “climb” to God suggests salvation is distant or achievable by heroic effort.

• Jesus settled the question: “No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended” (John 3:13).

• We do not need another mediator; Christ Himself is our access (Hebrews 4:14-16).

That is, to bring Christ down

“ (that is, to bring Christ down)” (Romans 10:6d)

• Asking who will bring Christ down ignores that He has already come: “The Word became flesh” (John 1:14).

• His incarnation, death, and resurrection are complete facts (Philippians 2:6-8).

• To seek another descent is to doubt His sufficiency; to believe is to rest in Him (Romans 5:8-11).

summary

Romans 10:6 teaches that righteousness comes by faith, not by heroic quests or inward schemes. God has already sent His Son; our part is simply to trust Him.
