What stops us from showing mercy?
What barriers might prevent us from showing mercy as in Luke 10:33?

Understanding the Moment

Luke 10:33: “But a Samaritan on a journey came upon him; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion.”

Jesus pictures an outsider whose heart is stirred the instant he “sees” the wounded man. He does not calculate; he acts. Our goal is to cultivate that same reflex of mercy.

Defining Mercy

– Mercy is love responding to misery.

– It moves beyond emotion to sacrificial action (Micah 6:8; James 2:15-16).

– It reflects God’s own character: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36).

Common Barriers to Showing Mercy

• Preoccupied Schedules

– “But a Levite…passed by on the other side” (Luke 10:32).

– Busyness can dull spiritual sensitivity (Mark 6:31).

• Personal Safety or Fear

– The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was notorious.

– Fear of risk or inconvenience keeps compassion at arm’s length (2 Timothy 1:7).

• Prejudice and Social Boundaries

– Jews and Samaritans despised each other (John 4:9).

– Partiality contradicts faith (James 2:1,9).

• Cost in Time, Money, Reputation

– The Samaritan uses his own oil, wine, bandages, animal, and two denarii (Luke 10:34-35).

– True mercy “spends” itself (Isaiah 58:10).

• Self-Righteous Comparisons

– “God, I thank You that I am not like other men” (Luke 18:11).

– A proud heart justifies inaction (Proverbs 21:13).

• Emotional Numbness

– “Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered” (Proverbs 21:13).

– Repeated neglect deadens compassion (Ephesians 4:17-19).

• Unforgiveness

– Past hurts can poison present opportunities (Ephesians 4:31-32).

– Mercy dies where bitterness rules.

Overcoming the Barriers

– Slow down and look: ask the Lord to sharpen spiritual eyesight (Colossians 4:5).

– Pray for courage; act before excuses crowd in (Psalm 31:24).

– Confess prejudice; remember Christ died for every tribe and tongue (Revelation 5:9).

– Budget generosity: set aside money, time, and margin for interruptions (1 John 3:17-18).

– Keep the cross in view: we received mercy at infinite cost to Jesus (Titus 3:4-5).

– Practice small mercies daily; habits of kindness train the heart (Galatians 6:9-10).

– Forgive quickly; cleared accounts free you to care (Matthew 6:14-15).

A Closing Encouragement

Mercy is not a mere feeling; it is the life of Christ flowing through His people. When the Spirit overcomes these barriers, others glimpse the Good Samaritan Himself—and God gets the glory (Matthew 5:16).

How can we emulate the Samaritan's compassion in our daily interactions with others?
