Which scriptures stress honoring God?
What other scriptures emphasize the importance of honoring God with our best resources?

Solomon’s Gold Standard — 1 Kings 6:21

“So Solomon overlaid the interior of the temple with pure gold, and he hung gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary and overlaid it with gold.”

Solomon spared no expense because the dwelling place of the LORD deserved the finest. Scripture consistently echoes this call to bring our very best.

Foundations in the Law

Exodus 25:1–2, 8 — “Tell the Israelites to bring Me an offering… from every man whose heart compels him… Then have them make a sanctuary for Me.”

Leviticus 22:20 — “Whatever has a defect you must not present, for it will not be accepted on your behalf.”

Numbers 18:29 — “You must present the best and holiest part of everything given to you as the LORD’s offering.”

These early commands lay down the principle: God is honored when He receives the choicest portion.

Early Examples that Speak Loudly

Genesis 4:4 — Abel “brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering.”

Exodus 35:21 — “Everyone whose heart stirred him and whose spirit prompted him brought an offering to the LORD for the work on the Tent of Meeting.”

Voluntary, wholehearted giving has always pleased the Lord.

Wisdom’s Reminder

Proverbs 3:9–10 — “Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest; then your barns will be filled with plenty.”

The harvest’s “firstfruits” were the sweetest and most eagerly awaited; giving them away first declares trust in God’s continued provision.

Prophetic Wake-Up Calls

Haggai 1:4, 7–8 — “Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?… Go up into the hills, bring wood, and build the house, so that I may be pleased with it and be glorified.”

Malachi 1:6–8, 14 — “When you present blind animals for sacrifice, is it not wrong?… Cursed is the deceiver who has in his flock a male that is unblemished yet sacrifices a blemished one to the LORD.”

When God’s people offered leftovers, He called it robbery of His honor.

Jesus Lifts the Standard Higher

Mark 12:41–44 — The widow’s two copper coins: “This poor widow has put in more than all the others.” True value is measured by cost to the giver, not the amount on paper.

Matthew 6:19–21 — “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Our investments reveal our affections.

Living Sacrifices in the Church Age

Romans 12:1 — “Offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.” Every facet of life—energy, talent, time—belongs on the altar.

2 Corinthians 8:3–5 — The Macedonians “gave beyond their ability… giving themselves first to the Lord.”

2 Corinthians 9:6–7 — “God loves a cheerful giver.”

Philippians 4:18 — Gifts to Paul are “a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.”

Generous, joyful giving continues to carry the fragrance of worship.

Practical Ways to Bring Our Best Today

• Finances: budget firstline giving, not last-minute scraps.

• Talents: serve in the body with skill and preparation, not half-heartedly.

• Time: schedule devotional, service, and family moments before entertainment.

• Work ethic: Colossians 3:23 — “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole heart, as working for the Lord.”

• Stewardship mindset: view possessions as tools for kingdom impact, mirroring Solomon’s lavish gold for God’s house.

From tabernacle to temple to church, Scripture’s melody is clear: God is worthy of the finest we can offer—because He already gave His best for us.

How can we apply the dedication shown in 1 Kings 6:21 to our worship?
