Why do people hear but not understand?
What causes people to "hear but never understand" in Matthew 13:14?

Setting the Scene

• Jesus has just told the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:3-9) and explained why He teaches in parables (Matthew 13:10-13).

• Quoting Isaiah 6:9-10, He diagnoses a tragic condition: people can sit under clear, authoritative teaching and still walk away unchanged.

Tracing the Quote Back to Isaiah

Isaiah 6:9-10: “ …‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ ”

• In Isaiah’s day, Judah’s repeated refusal to repent led God to pronounce judicial hardening. Jesus says the same prophecy is playing out again.

Immediate Causes Jesus Names

Matthew 13:15 highlights three internal choices:

• “this people’s heart has grown callous” – deliberate hardening through sin and self-interest.

• “they hardly hear with their ears” – selective listening; truth filters through convenience.

• “they have closed their eyes” – willful blindness; a decision to shut out convicting light.

Deeper Spiritual Dynamics

• Love of darkness over light (John 3:19-20).

• Bondage to traditions or worldly concerns (Mark 7:9, Luke 14:18-20).

• Satanic blinding of minds (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).

• God’s judicial response: persistent rejection leads to God confirming the hardness (Romans 1:24-28; Exodus 9:12).

Illustrations from the Parable of the Sower

• Hard soil – immediate rejection; the devil “snatches away” the word (Matthew 13:19).

• Rocky soil – shallow profession; trials expose the lack of root (Matthew 13:20-21).

• Thorny soil – divided heart; love of riches and worries choke truth (Matthew 13:22).

All three explain “hearing” without true understanding or lasting fruit.

Supporting Scriptures

Hebrews 4:2: “The message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.”

James 1:22: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

Ezekiel 12:2: “You have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for you are a rebellious house.”

Takeaways for Us

• Examine the heart: unconfessed sin deadens spiritual perception (Psalm 32:3-4).

• Cultivate reverent listening: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15).

• Depend on the Spirit: only He opens eyes and ears (1 Corinthians 2:14).

• Persist in sowing the Word: God still heals those who will “turn and be healed” (Matthew 13:15).
