Yet the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam,

Balak king of Moab hired Balaam to pronounce a curse on Israel as the nation camped near Moab’s border. Balaam possessed a reputation as a diviner, but he could not speak or act beyond God’s command. The Lord overruled Balak’s plan and prevented Balaam from harming Israel.

Num 22:12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them.…
Num 23:8 How can I curse those whom God has not cursed?…

and the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you,

Instead of cursing Israel, Balaam repeatedly announced God’s blessing upon them. What Moab intended as spiritual and political harm became a public declaration that Israel belonged to the Lord and would not be overcome by its enemies, emphasizing God’s ability to transform intended harm into good for His people.

because the LORD your God loves you.

God’s protection arose from His covenant commitment to Israel, established through His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Israel’s security rested not in Balaam’s words or in its own strength, but in the faithful love of the Lord.
