I did not receive it from any man,

Paul’s gospel did not originate in Jerusalem, from the other apostles, or from the religious traditions in which he had been trained. Though he later met Peter and James, his message was not dependent on their instruction. The risen Christ Himself appointed Paul as an apostle, fulfilling Paul’s opening claim that his apostleship came through Jesus Christ and God the Father (Galatians 1:1).

nor was I taught it;

Paul had received rigorous rabbinic training under Gamaliel and had once advanced in Judaism beyond many of his peers (Acts 22:3; Galatians 1:14). Yet no human teacher had led him into the gospel he now proclaimed. His former learning could not reveal the crucified and risen Jesus as the Messiah or show that salvation comes through faith rather than works of the law.

God disclosed to Paul the truth he had opposed: Jesus is the promised Christ, the Son of God, and the Savior of Jews and Gentiles alike. Paul’s calling resembled the commissioning of the prophets, who spoke God’s word because God had made His will known to them. The gospel therefore carried divine authority and could not be altered to satisfy those who demanded circumcision and submission to the Mosaic law as conditions of salvation.

The Lord appeared to Paul on the Damascus road and transformed a persecutor of the church into a witness of the faith he had tried to destroy (Acts 9:3–6; 9:15). Paul’s message rested on the living Lord who revealed Himself, commissioned His servant, and entrusted him with the gospel of grace.
