When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son. When Israel was a child,Israel stood at the beginning of its life as a nation, descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and preserved by God during the years in Egypt. Though small, vulnerable, and unable to secure its own future, Israel belonged to the Lord through His covenant promises. The image of a child reveals both Israel’s dependence and God’s fatherly care. Jer 31:20 Is not Ephraim a precious son to Me, a delightful child?… I loved him, God’s love preceded Israel’s faithfulness and rested on His gracious choice and covenant commitment. He remembered His promises to the patriarchs, heard the cries of their descendants under Pharaoh, and acted to redeem them. Israel’s repeated rebellion did not erase the reality of God’s steadfast love, though it brought His discipline. Mal 1:2-3 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. Matthew 2:15 recognizes Jesus’ return from Egypt as the fuller fulfillment of this pattern: Israel, God’s son, failed in obedience, but Jesus, the true Son, fulfilled the Father’s will.
