And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria.

God assured Hezekiah that neither the king nor Jerusalem would fall to Sennacherib. Assyria had already destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel and subdued much of Judah, making its threat against Jerusalem severe and immediate. Deliverance would come by God’s power rather than Judah’s military strength.

I will defend this city.

Jerusalem would be preserved because God had chosen it as the city of David and the place of His temple. The Lord’s protection upheld His covenant purposes for Judah and preserved the Davidic line through which the promised Messiah would come.
