Jeremiah’s warnings were not distant abstractions; Babylon’s military campaign would become the instrument of God’s judgment upon Judah’s idolatry and covenant rebellion. Oba 1:1 This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom… a great commotion from the land to the north. Babylon lay east of Judah, but its armies traveled through the northern routes of the Fertile Crescent before descending into the land. The approaching tumult announces invasion, fear, and the collapse of Judah’s security, fulfilling the warning God gave Jeremiah at the beginning of his ministry (Jeremiah 1:14–16).
