Joshua 14:12
Now therefore give me this hill country that the LORD promised me on that day, for you yourself heard then that the Anakim were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD's help I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken."
Now therefore give me this hill country

Caleb asks for Hebron, the difficult inheritance assigned to him because he had followed the LORD wholeheartedly. At eighty-five years old, he does not seek an easier portion of the land but the region still occupied by powerful enemies. Hebron also carried deep covenant significance as the burial place of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebekah, and Leah.

Jos 15:13-14 According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave…
Jos 21:11-12 They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron)…

that the LORD promised me on that day,

Moses had promised Caleb this inheritance forty-five years earlier after Caleb faithfully testified that Israel could take the land. The long delay had not weakened Caleb’s confidence, because God’s promise remained unchanged through the years of wilderness wandering and conquest.

Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit…
Deu 1:36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it,…

for you yourself heard then that the Anakim were there,

Caleb reminds Joshua that the Anakim had been present when the spies first explored Canaan. Their size and reputation had caused the other ten spies to fear, yet Caleb had trusted the LORD’s power rather than measuring Israel’s prospects by human strength.

Num 13:28-33 Nevertheless, the people living in the land are strong,…
Deu 9:2 The people are strong and tall, the descendants of…

with great and fortified cities.

The territory Caleb requests contains fortified centers that would require real warfare and perseverance. Faith does not deny the strength of opposition; it rests upon God while facing opposition honestly.

Deu 1:28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt,…
Deu 9:1 Hear, O Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan…

Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out,

Caleb speaks with humble dependence rather than presumption. God had promised the land, but Caleb still recognizes that victory comes through the LORD’s presence and requires obedient action. His confidence joins courage with reverence.

Jos 23:5 The LORD your God will push them out of your way…
Deu 7:22 The LORD your God will drive out these nations…

as the LORD has spoken.”

Caleb’s request rests on God’s spoken promise, not personal ambition or past achievement. The LORD would indeed enable him to take Hebron, and Caleb’s descendants received the city as their inheritance.

Jos 23:14 Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth…
1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…

Caleb --A Green Old Age
'And Caleb... said unto him (Joshua), Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh- barnea.'--JOSHUA xiv. 6. Five and forty years had passed since the Lord had 'said this thing.' It was the promise to these two, now old men, of the prolongation of their lives, and to Caleb of his inheritance in the land. Seven years of fighting have been got through, and the preparations are being made for the division of the land by lot. But, before that is

Exploring Canaan by Faith
EXPLORING CANAAN BY FAITH I can not understand faith. What is faith, anyway? I try to believe; sometimes I feel that my faith is strong, but at other times I feel that my faith is giving way. Can you help me in this matter? Faith seems such a hazy, intangible, elusive thing; now I think I have it, now it seems certain I have it not. I feel at times that my faith is so strong I could believe anything, then again I feel that every bit of faith I had is gone. Can you give me any instructions that will

Joshua
The book of Joshua is the natural complement of the Pentateuch. Moses is dead, but the people are on the verge of the promised land, and the story of early Israel would be incomplete, did it not record the conquest of that land and her establishment upon it. The divine purpose moves restlessly on, until it is accomplished; so "after the death of Moses, Jehovah spake to Joshua," i. 1. The book falls naturally into three divisions: (a) the conquest of Canaan (i.-xii.), (b) the settlement of the
