On that day Moses swore to me, saying, 'Surely the land on which you have set foot will be an inheritance to you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.' While Israel responded in fear and unbelief, Caleb and Joshua trusted the LORD’s power to give the land. The promise rested on God’s own declaration in Numbers 14:24 and was later reaffirmed as Israel prepared to enter Canaan. Num 14:24 But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit… ‘Surely the land on which you have set foot Caleb had walked through the hill country around Hebron during the reconnaissance mission forty-five years earlier. Hebron was an ancient and strategic city associated with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, and their burial place at Machpelah. The territory remained occupied by the Anakim, yet Caleb regarded neither its fortified cities nor its formidable inhabitants as obstacles to God’s promise. Jos 1:3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot… will be an inheritance to you and your children forever, The land was granted to Caleb’s family as a lasting possession within Israel’s inheritance. God’s promise extended beyond Caleb’s lifetime, establishing his descendants in a portion of the land promised to Abraham. Hebron later became a Levitical city and a city of refuge, while Caleb’s descendants retained the surrounding territory. He did not deny the dangers in Canaan, but he believed God’s covenant promise despite them.
