Numbers 18:7
But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood for everything concerning the altar and what is inside the veil, and you are to perform that service. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift, but any outsider who comes near the sanctuary must be put to death."
But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood

God entrusted the priestly office to Aaron and his descendants alone. The hereditary priesthood preserved the order God established for Israel’s worship and guarded the sanctuary from unauthorized approach.

Exo 28:1 “Next, have your brother Aaron brought to you…
Exo 29:44 So I will consecrate the Tent of Meeting and the altar,…
Exo 29:9 Wrap the sashes around Aaron and his sons…

for everything concerning the altar and what is inside the veil,

Aaron’s family bore responsibility for sacrifices at the altar and for the sacred ministry associated with the Most Holy Place. The veil marked the boundary before God’s immediate presence, reminding Israel that sin separated mankind from the holy God. Christ fulfilled the sacrificial purpose of the altar and opened access to God through His death, when the temple veil was torn.

Lev 16:2 And the LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron…
Exo 26:33 And hang the veil from the clasps and place…
Exo 27:1 You are to build an altar of acacia wood.…

and you are to perform that service.

Priestly service required faithful obedience in offering sacrifices, handling holy things, and carrying out God’s appointed worship. Their ministry was both a privilege and a solemn obligation on behalf of the nation.

Exo 28:35 Aaron must wear the robe whenever he ministers,…
Heb 5:1 Every high priest is appointed from among men…
Lev 8:35 You must remain at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting…

I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift,

The priesthood came by God’s gracious appointment, not human ambition or tribal claim. Aaron’s sons were stewards of a sacred gift and would answer to God for its faithful administration. The office anticipates Jesus Christ, the perfect and eternal High Priest, whose ministry does not pass to another.

Deu 18:5 For the LORD your God has chosen Levi and his sons…
Heb 5:4 No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God…
1Sa 2:28 And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father…

but any outsider who comes near the sanctuary must be put to death.”

Anyone not authorized by God who intruded into priestly ministry or approached the sanctuary unlawfully faced death. The warning upheld the holiness of God and protected Israel from the judgment that follows profaning what He has consecrated. Through Christ, believers are made a royal priesthood, yet they still approach God only through His appointed Mediator and with reverence.

Teaching Points
Divine Appointment and Order
God establishes specific roles and responsibilities within His community. Recognizing and respecting these roles is crucial for maintaining order and holiness.

The Gift of Service
The priesthood is described as a gift, emphasizing that serving God and His people is a privilege and responsibility, not a right.

The Seriousness of Holiness
Approaching God requires reverence and obedience to His commands. Unauthorized approaches signify a lack of respect for God's holiness and order.

Christ as Our High Priest
Jesus fulfills the role of the ultimate high priest, granting believers direct access to God. This shifts the focus from a select group to the priesthood of all believers.

Guarding the Sacred
Just as the priests were to guard the sacred duties, believers today are called to guard their hearts and lives, ensuring they align with God's will and purpose.

Service a Gift
... I have given your priest's office unto you as a service of gift.'--NUM. xviii. 7. All Christians are priests--to offer sacrifices, alms, especially prayers; to make God known to men. I. Our priesthood is a gift of God's love. We are apt to think of our duties as burdensome. They are an honour and a mark of God's grace. 1. They are His gift-- (a) The power to do. All capacities and possessions from Him. (b) The wish to do. 'Worketh in you to will.' (c) The right to do, through Christ. 2.

Whether Angels Grieve for the Ills of those whom they Guard?
Objection 1: It would seem that angels grieve for the ills of those whom they guard. For it is written (Is. 33:7): "The angels of peace shall weep bitterly." But weeping is a sign of grief and sorrow. Therefore angels grieve for the ills of those whom they guard. Objection 2: Further, according to Augustine (De Civ. Dei xiv, 15), "sorrow is for those things that happen against our will." But the loss of the man whom he has guarded is against the guardian angel's will. Therefore angels grieve for

Numbers
Like the last part of Exodus, and the whole of Leviticus, the first part of Numbers, i.-x. 28--so called,[1] rather inappropriately, from the census in i., iii., (iv.), xxvi.--is unmistakably priestly in its interests and language. Beginning with a census of the men of war (i.) and the order of the camp (ii.), it devotes specific attention to the Levites, their numbers and duties (iii., iv.). Then follow laws for the exclusion of the unclean, v. 1-4, for determining the manner and amount of restitution
