One clear sign is a refusal to acknowledge who Jesus truly is. As it says, “Who is the liar if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist…” (1 John 2:22). Anyone promoting a counterfeit version of Christ, or dismissing Him as Lord, fits this pattern.

2. Operates in Lawlessness

Scripture highlights that this figure embodies rebellion. The Bible warns, “Let no one deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed” (2 Thessalonians 2:3). This lawlessness is rooted in opposition to God’s standards.

3. Exalts Himself as God

He elevates himself above every object of worship, as we read: “He will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped” (2 Thessalonians 2:4). This arrogance goes beyond mere pride; it involves claiming authority that rightly belongs to the Almighty alone.

4. Conjures Powerful Deception

This contender for ultimate power doesn’t merely rely on clever words—he backs his claims with supernatural deception. “The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder” (2 Thessalonians 2:9). Those miracles can look genuine—but they lead away from the truth.

5. Draws People into False Worship

Revelation shows a world under his sway: “And all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast…” (Revelation 13:8). His aim is to redirect praise and adoration away from God. If society seems eager to elevate someone or something above the Creator, that’s a warning sign.

6. Blasphemes God

He doesn’t refrain from speaking against the divine. Scripture reveals, “And the beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and blasphemous words…” (Revelation 13:5). Mockery and unholy proclamations are key markers, revealing a heart settled against the truth of God.

7. Rules with a Ruthless Grip

Control and domination mark his reign. Revelation states, “He was given authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation” (Revelation 13:7). Though he has global power, it’s short-lived in the grand scheme. His oppressive style exposes the darker motivations at work.

8. Performs Fake Miracles to Mislead

While genuine miracles come from above, this adversary uses misleading wonders to lead many astray. “They are spirits of demons performing signs” (Revelation 16:14). The spectacular displays aren’t trustworthy evidence of goodness—rather, they lure people away from true faith.

9. Connected to the Mysterious Number

Revelation mentions a cryptic clue, “This calls for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and that number is six hundred sixty-six” (Revelation 13:18). This is more than a puzzle; it’s a caution to remain discerning and steadfast.

10. Appears Just Before Christ’s Ultimate Triumph

Finally, Scripture positions him as part of the closing drama before the victorious return of the true King. “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of His mouth and annihilate by the majesty of His arrival” (2 Thessalonians 2:8). His downfall is certain, and that promise brings hope.
