Arni is a biblical figure mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus Christ as recorded in the New Testament. His name appears in the Gospel of Luke, which provides a detailed lineage tracing Jesus' ancestry back to Adam. Arni is listed as an ancestor of Jesus, situated within the line of descent that connects King David to the Messiah.

Biblical Reference:

Arni is mentioned specifically in Luke 3:33, which states: "the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah" . This passage is part of the genealogy that Luke presents, which is distinct from the genealogy found in the Gospel of Matthew. Luke's genealogy traces Jesus' lineage through His mother Mary, providing a biological line, whereas Matthew traces it through Joseph, His legal father.

Genealogical Context:

In the genealogical record, Arni is positioned between Admin and Hezron. The genealogy in Luke is notable for its emphasis on Jesus' human ancestry, underscoring His fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah's lineage. By tracing Jesus' ancestry back to Judah, the genealogy reaffirms the prophetic promise that the Messiah would come from the tribe of Judah, as foretold in Genesis 49:10.

Theological Significance:

The inclusion of Arni in the genealogy highlights the continuity of God's redemptive plan throughout history. Each name in the genealogy represents a link in the chain of God's covenantal promises, culminating in the birth of Jesus Christ. The genealogies in the Gospels serve to authenticate Jesus' messianic credentials, affirming His rightful place as the promised Savior.

Historical and Cultural Insights:

While little is known about Arni as an individual, his mention in the genealogy reflects the importance of family lineage in Jewish culture. Genealogies were crucial for establishing identity, inheritance rights, and tribal affiliations. They also served to demonstrate the faithfulness of God in preserving the line through which the Messiah would come.

Conclusion:

Arni's presence in the genealogy of Jesus underscores the meticulous care with which the Gospel writers documented Jesus' lineage, affirming His fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. Through figures like Arni, the Bible reveals the intricate tapestry of God's salvation history, woven through generations to bring forth the Savior of the world.

But in the King James Version, following Textus Receptus of the New Testament, and in the genealogical list of Matthew 13:4 the same person is called Aram (Greek: Aram) in both the King James Version and the Revised Version, margin. In Matthew the Revised Version (British and American), however, the form is Ram, which is nearest to the Old Testament name Ram (ram, "high"). Ram was great-grandson of Judah and ancestor of David (Ruth 4:19 1 Chronicles 2:9, 10).
