In theological discourse, the term "attributes" refers to the inherent qualities or characteristics of God as revealed in the Bible. These attributes are essential to understanding the nature and character of God, and they are often categorized into communicable and incommunicable attributes. Communicable attributes are those that can be found, to some degree, in humans, while incommunicable attributes are unique to God.

Incommunicable Attributes

1. Aseity: God's self-existence and independence from creation. He is the uncaused cause, existing eternally without reliance on anything outside Himself. In Exodus 3:14, God declares, "I AM WHO I AM," emphasizing His self-sufficiency.

2. Immutability: God's unchanging nature. He is constant and does not change in His essence, character, or will. Malachi 3:6 states, "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed."

3. Eternity: God's existence beyond time. He has no beginning or end and is not bound by temporal limitations. Psalm 90:2 proclaims, "Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God."

4. Omnipresence: God's presence in all places at all times. He transcends spatial limitations, as expressed in Jeremiah 23:24, "Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?" declares the LORD. "Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?" declares the LORD.

5. Omniscience: God's complete and perfect knowledge. He knows all things, past, present, and future, as well as the thoughts and intentions of every heart. Psalm 147:5 affirms, "Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit."

6. Omnipotence: God's all-powerful nature. He is able to accomplish His will without any limitation. In Matthew 19:26, Jesus states, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Communicable Attributes

1. Holiness: God's absolute moral purity and separation from sin. He calls His people to reflect His holiness. Leviticus 19:2 commands, "Speak to the entire congregation of the Israelites and tell them: 'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.'"

2. Love: God's self-giving and sacrificial nature, demonstrated supremely in the sending of His Son. 1 John 4:8 declares, "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

3. Justice: God's commitment to righteousness and fairness. He judges sin and upholds justice. Deuteronomy 32:4 describes Him as "The Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He."

4. Mercy: God's compassion and kindness towards those in distress. He is patient and forgiving, as seen in Ephesians 2:4-5, "But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!"

5. Truthfulness: God's faithfulness and reliability. He is the source of all truth and cannot lie. Numbers 23:19 affirms, "God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?"

Understanding the attributes of God is foundational for a proper theological framework and for cultivating a deeper relationship with Him. These attributes reveal the majesty and mystery of God, inviting believers to worship Him in spirit and truth.
