The term "cheekbone" refers to the prominent bone beneath the eye, known anatomically as the zygomatic bone. In biblical literature, the cheekbone is often mentioned in the context of physical strength, beauty, and sometimes violence or suffering. The cheekbone, as part of the face, holds symbolic significance in various biblical narratives and teachings.

Biblical References:

1. Judges 15:15 · One of the most notable references to the cheekbone in the Bible is found in the account of Samson. "He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and struck down a thousand men with it." While the term "jawbone" is used here, it is closely related to the cheekbone, as both are part of the facial structure. This passage highlights the strength and might of Samson, who used the jawbone as an instrument of divine judgment against the Philistines.

2. Job 16:10 · In the Book of Job, the cheekbone is mentioned in the context of suffering and humiliation. "They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with scorn; they unite against me." Here, the striking of the cheeks symbolizes the deep affliction and disgrace that Job experiences at the hands of his adversaries. It reflects the broader theme of undeserved suffering and the testing of faith.

3. Lamentations 3:30 · The cheekbone is also referenced in a call to humility and patience in the face of adversity. "Let him offer his cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with reproach." This verse encourages a posture of submission and endurance, echoing the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament about turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39).

Symbolism and Interpretation:

In biblical symbolism, the cheekbone can represent both vulnerability and resilience. The act of striking the cheek is often associated with insult and injury, yet it also serves as a test of character and faith. The physical act of turning the other cheek, as taught by Jesus, is a radical call to non-retaliation and forgiveness, challenging believers to respond to aggression with grace and humility.

The cheekbone, as part of the human visage, is also linked to beauty and the image of God in humanity. In the poetic and wisdom literature of the Bible, the face, including the cheekbones, is often described in terms of beauty and divine craftsmanship, reflecting the inherent dignity and worth bestowed upon human beings by their Creator.

Cultural and Historical Context:

In ancient Near Eastern culture, the face was a significant aspect of personal identity and social interaction. The act of striking someone's cheek was not only a physical assault but also a profound social insult. Understanding the cultural context of these references helps illuminate the depth of meaning in the biblical text, where physical actions often carry spiritual and moral implications.

Overall, the cheekbone in biblical literature serves as a multifaceted symbol, encompassing themes of strength, suffering, humility, and divine image. Through its various mentions, it invites readers to reflect on the nature of human dignity, the reality of suffering, and the call to live out the principles of the Kingdom of God.

CHEEK; CHEEKBONE

chek, chek'-bon:

(1) lechi; siagon, "the jaw," "jaw-bone," "side of the face." The Hebrew word denotes originally freshness and rounded softness of the cheek, a sign of beauty in youth and maiden (Songs 1:10; Songs 5:13). The oriental guards with jealous care his cheek from touch or defilement, therefore a stroke on the cheek was, and is to this day, regarded as an act of extreme rudeness of behavior, a deadly affront. Our Saviour, however, teaches us in Matthew 5:39 and Luke 6:29 that even this insult is to be ignored and pardoned.

Jawbones of animals have been frequently used as tools and weapons among primitive people. We see this sufficiently proven from cave deposits in many parts of the world, and from recent ethnological researches, especially in Australia. In the light of this evidence it is interesting to note that Samson used a jawbone of an ass with success against his enemies the Philistines (Judges 15:15).

(2) malqoach (Psalm 22:15), is a dual form indicative of the two jaws, to which a parched tongue seems to cleave.

(3) methalle`ah (Job 29:17), better "cheek teeth" (which see).
