Divulging, in a biblical context, refers to the act of revealing or making known information that was previously hidden or secret. This concept is significant in Scripture, as it pertains to the disclosure of divine mysteries, the sharing of personal or communal sins, and the communication of God's will to His people.

Divine Revelation

The Bible frequently addresses the theme of God divulging His plans and purposes to humanity. In the Old Testament, God often revealed His will through prophets. Amos 3:7 states, "Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets." This underscores the importance of divine revelation as a means by which God communicates with His people.

In the New Testament, the ultimate act of divine divulgence is found in the person of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul speaks of the mystery of Christ being revealed to the Gentiles, saying, "This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 3:6). Here, the mystery of salvation, once hidden, is made known to all through the gospel.

Confession of Sin

Divulging also relates to the confession of sins, both personal and communal. The Bible encourages believers to confess their sins as a means of obtaining forgiveness and healing. James 5:16 instructs, "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail." This act of confession is a form of divulging one's transgressions, leading to spiritual restoration.

In the Old Testament, the confession of sin is often associated with repentance and the seeking of God's mercy. For instance, in Nehemiah 9:2 , the Israelites "stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers." This public acknowledgment of sin was a crucial step in their return to covenant faithfulness.

Guarding the Tongue

While the Bible encourages the divulgence of divine truths and the confession of sins, it also warns against the careless or harmful disclosure of information. Proverbs 11:13 cautions, "A gossip reveals a secret, but a trustworthy person keeps a confidence." This highlights the importance of discretion and the responsible handling of sensitive information.

The New Testament echoes this sentiment, urging believers to exercise wisdom in their speech. Ephesians 4:29 advises, "Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen." Here, the emphasis is on using words to edify rather than to harm or betray trust.

Divulging in the Early Church

In the early church, the divulgence of spiritual gifts and revelations played a significant role in the community's life. The Apostle Paul addresses the proper use of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 14, emphasizing that revelations should be shared in an orderly manner for the edification of the church. He writes, "If a revelation comes to someone who is seated, the first speaker should hold his peace" (1 Corinthians 14:30). This instruction ensures that the sharing of divine insights contributes to the building up of the body of Christ.

Overall, the concept of divulging in the Bible encompasses the responsible and purposeful sharing of divine truths, the confession of sins, and the careful management of speech. These elements are integral to the life of faith and the community of believers.
