The term "Holy-place" refers to a sacred area designated for worship and the presence of God, particularly within the context of the Tabernacle and the Temple in ancient Israel. It is a significant concept in the Bible, representing a space set apart for divine service and communion with God.

Biblical Context and Description

In the Old Testament, the Holy-place is a specific section within the Tabernacle and later the Temple, distinct from the Most Holy Place (or Holy of Holies). The Holy-place is described in detail in the books of Exodus and Leviticus, where God provides Moses with precise instructions for its construction and use.

The Tabernacle

The Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary used by the Israelites during their wilderness wanderings, contained the Holy-place. According to Exodus 26:33-35 , the Holy-place was separated from the Most Holy Place by a veil: "Hang the veil from the clasps and place the ark of the Testimony behind the veil. The veil will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. Put the mercy seat on the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy Place. Place the table outside the veil on the north side of the tabernacle, and put the lampstand opposite it on the south side."

Within the Holy-place, there were three primary furnishings: the Table of Showbread, the Golden Lampstand (Menorah), and the Altar of Incense. Each of these items held symbolic significance and played a role in the worship practices of the Israelites.

· Table of Showbread: This table held the "bread of the Presence," which was set before the Lord as a perpetual offering (Exodus 25:30). It symbolized God's provision and the covenant relationship between God and His people.

· Golden Lampstand: The lampstand, with its seven lamps, provided light within the Holy-place (Exodus 25:31-40). It represented the light of God's presence and guidance.

· Altar of Incense: Positioned before the veil, the altar of incense was used for burning fragrant incense, symbolizing the prayers of the people ascending to God (Exodus 30:1-10).

The Temple

When Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem, the Holy-place was similarly structured, though on a grander scale. The Temple's Holy-place continued to house the Table of Showbread, the Golden Lampstand, and the Altar of Incense (1 Kings 6:17-22). The Temple served as the central place of worship for the Israelites and the dwelling place of God's presence among His people.

Symbolism and Theological Significance

The Holy-place holds deep theological significance in the biblical narrative. It represents the idea of holiness and separation, emphasizing the need for purity and reverence in approaching God. The Holy-place serves as a reminder of God's desire to dwell among His people and the importance of maintaining a sacred space for worship and communion with Him.

In the New Testament, the concept of the Holy-place is expanded through the work of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:11-12 speaks of Christ as the High Priest who entered the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made by human hands, to secure eternal redemption. This passage highlights the fulfillment of the Old Testament sacrificial system and the access believers now have to God's presence through Christ.

Conclusion

The Holy-place, as depicted in the Bible, is a vital component of the worship and religious life of ancient Israel. It underscores the themes of holiness, divine presence, and the covenant relationship between God and His people. Through the lens of the New Testament, the Holy-place finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ, who provides believers with direct access to God.
