1. Ira the Jairite

Ira the Jairite is mentioned in the context of King David's reign. He is identified as one of David's chief officials, serving in a significant capacity within the royal administration. In 2 Samuel 20:26, the Berean Standard Bible states, "And Ira the Jairite was David’s priest." The term "priest" here is understood by some scholars to mean a chief minister or a high-ranking official, rather than a religious priest in the traditional sense. Ira's designation as a Jairite suggests he was from the region of Gilead, specifically from the descendants of Jair, who was a notable figure in the tribe of Manasseh (Numbers 32:41).

2. Ira the Ithrite

Another individual named Ira is listed among David's mighty warriors, known as the "Thirty." This Ira is identified as an Ithrite, indicating his association with the Ithrites, a clan within the tribe of Judah. In 2 Samuel 23:38, the BSB records, "Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite." The inclusion of Ira in this elite group highlights his valor and significance as a warrior during David's reign. The Ithrites, though not extensively detailed in the biblical narrative, were evidently a part of the military and social structure that supported David's kingship.

3. Ira the Tekoite

In 1 Chronicles 11:28, Ira is again mentioned as one of David's mighty men, this time identified as a Tekoite. The BSB states, "Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite." Tekoa was a town in Judah, and Ira's designation as a Tekoite links him to this region. His father, Ikkesh, is also noted, suggesting a family of some standing. Ira's role as a mighty man underscores his bravery and loyalty to David, contributing to the stability and success of David's military endeavors.

4. Significance and Legacy

The individuals named Ira in the biblical narrative, though not extensively detailed, play crucial roles in the context of King David's reign. Whether serving as a chief official or as a valiant warrior, each Ira contributed to the establishment and maintenance of David's kingdom. Their inclusion in the biblical record reflects the importance of loyalty, bravery, and service in the unfolding account of Israel's monarchy. The mention of multiple individuals named Ira also highlights the commonality of the name during this period, as well as the diverse roles played by those who bore it.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
IRA

i'-ra (`ira'; Eiras):

(1) A person referred to in 2 Samuel 20:26 as "priest" (so the Revised Version (British and American) correctly; the King James Version "a chief ruler," the American Standard Revised Version "chief minister") unto David. The translation of the Revised Version (British and American) is the only possible one; but, according to the text, Ira was "a Jairite," and thus of the tribe of Manasseh (Numbers 32:41) and not eligible to the priesthood. On the basis of the Peshitta some would correct "Jairite" of 2 Samuel 20:26 into "Jattirite," referring to Jattir, a priestly city within the territory of Judah (Joshua 21:14). Others point to 2 Samuel 8:18 margin, "David's sons were priests," as an indication that in David's time some non-Levites were permitted to serve-in some sense-as priests.

(2) An "Ithrite," or (with a different pointing of the text) a "Jattirite," one of David's "thirty" (2 Samuel 23:38 parallel 1 Chronicles 11:40); possibly identical with (1).

(3) Another of David's "thirty," son of Ikkesh of Tekoa (2 Samuel 23:26 1 Chronicles 11:28) and a captain of the temple guard (1 Chronicles 27:9).
