Introduction:
Jezebel is a prominent figure in the Old Testament, known for her role as the wife of King Ahab of Israel and her influence in promoting the worship of Baal. Her account is primarily found in the books of 1 Kings and 2 Kings. Jezebel's actions and character have made her a symbol of idolatry, immorality, and opposition to the worship of Yahweh.

Background and Marriage to Ahab:
Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, and she married Ahab, the king of Israel. This marriage was politically advantageous, strengthening alliances between Israel and Phoenicia. However, it also introduced significant religious and cultural challenges. Jezebel was a devoted worshiper of Baal, a Canaanite deity, and she sought to establish Baal worship as the state religion in Israel.

Promotion of Baal Worship:
Jezebel's influence over Ahab led to the construction of a temple and altar for Baal in Samaria, the capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. This act was a direct violation of the First Commandment, which forbids the worship of other gods. Jezebel's zeal for Baal worship included the persecution of Yahweh's prophets. 1 Kings 18:4 states, "While Jezebel was killing off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water."

Conflict with Elijah:
Jezebel's actions brought her into direct conflict with the prophet Elijah, a staunch defender of Yahweh. The most notable confrontation occurred on Mount Carmel, where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to demonstrate the true God. After Yahweh answered Elijah's prayer with fire from heaven, Elijah ordered the execution of the prophets of Baal. Jezebel, enraged by the defeat and the death of her prophets, vowed to kill Elijah, forcing him to flee for his life (1 Kings 19:1-3).

Naboth's Vineyard:
Jezebel's influence extended beyond religious matters to political corruption and injustice. When Ahab desired Naboth's vineyard and Naboth refused to sell it, Jezebel orchestrated a scheme to have Naboth falsely accused of blasphemy and stoned to death. This act of treachery allowed Ahab to seize the vineyard. The LORD, through Elijah, pronounced judgment on Ahab and Jezebel for this crime, declaring that dogs would devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel (1 Kings 21:23).

Death and Legacy:
Jezebel's death fulfilled Elijah's prophecy. In 2 Kings 9, Jehu, anointed as king of Israel, confronted Jezebel in Jezreel. She was thrown from a window by her eunuchs at Jehu's command, and her body was trampled by horses. When they went to bury her, they found only her skull, feet, and hands, as dogs had devoured the rest, fulfilling the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah (2 Kings 9:30-37).

Symbolism and Influence:
Jezebel's name has become synonymous with wickedness and idolatry. In the New Testament, the church in Thyatira is warned against tolerating a woman who "calls herself a prophetess" and leads others into immorality and idolatry, likened to Jezebel (Revelation 2:20). Her account serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of turning away from God and the consequences of leading others into sin.
