Jonathan, the son of Kareah, is a biblical figure mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah. He is recognized as a leader among the military officers who remained in Judah after the Babylonian conquest and the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Jonathan, along with his brother Johanan, played a significant role during the turbulent period following the fall of Jerusalem.

Background and Context

After the Babylonian forces, led by King Nebuchadnezzar, captured Jerusalem, they appointed Gedaliah as governor over the remnant of Judah. Gedaliah was tasked with overseeing the people who were left in the land, primarily the poor and those who had not been exiled to Babylon. This period was marked by instability and fear, as the people of Judah grappled with the aftermath of the conquest and the loss of their sovereignty.

Role and Actions

Jonathan, son of Kareah, is first mentioned in the context of the political intrigue and unrest that followed the appointment of Gedaliah. In Jeremiah 40:8, he is listed among the commanders of the forces in the open country who came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. These commanders included Johanan, Jonathan's brother, and others who had been leading bands of soldiers during the chaotic period of the Babylonian invasion.

The narrative in Jeremiah 40-41 highlights the tension and distrust among the remaining leaders in Judah. Johanan, Jonathan's brother, warned Gedaliah of a plot against his life by Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, who was of royal blood and had been sent by the king of the Ammonites. Despite the warning, Gedaliah did not believe Johanan and was subsequently assassinated by Ishmael (Jeremiah 41:1-3).

Following Gedaliah's assassination, Ishmael took captives and attempted to flee to the Ammonites. Johanan, along with Jonathan and the other commanders, pursued Ishmael and successfully rescued the captives at Gibeon (Jeremiah 41:11-14). This act demonstrated their commitment to the welfare of the people and their desire to restore some semblance of order in the land.

Flight to Egypt

After the rescue, Johanan and the other leaders, including Jonathan, faced a critical decision. Fearing retribution from the Babylonians for the murder of Gedaliah, they contemplated fleeing to Egypt for safety. In Jeremiah 42, they sought guidance from the prophet Jeremiah, asking him to pray to the LORD for direction. Jeremiah delivered God's message, urging them to remain in the land and promising divine protection if they obeyed. However, if they chose to go to Egypt, they would face the very calamities they sought to escape (Jeremiah 42:10-16).

Despite the clear warning, Johanan, Jonathan, and the other leaders rejected Jeremiah's counsel. They accused him of lying and decided to lead the remnant to Egypt, taking Jeremiah with them (Jeremiah 43:1-7). This decision reflected a lack of faith and trust in God's promises, ultimately leading to further judgment upon the people.

Legacy

Jonathan, son of Kareah, is remembered as a key figure during a pivotal moment in Judah's history. His actions, alongside his brother Johanan, illustrate the complexities and challenges faced by the leaders of the remnant community. Their account serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to God's word and the consequences of disobedience. Jonathan's involvement in these events highlights the struggle for leadership and survival in the aftermath of national catastrophe.
