Weather: Signs of

In the Bible, weather often serves as a significant indicator of divine communication, judgment, and prophecy. Throughout Scripture, various weather phenomena are depicted as signs from God, conveying messages to His people and demonstrating His sovereign control over creation.

Divine Communication and Judgment

1. The Flood: One of the most prominent examples of weather as a sign is the Great Flood during the time of Noah. In Genesis 6-9, God uses the floodwaters as a means of judgment against the wickedness of humanity. Genesis 7:11-12 states, "In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. And the rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights."

2. Plagues of Egypt: In Exodus, God uses weather-related phenomena as part of the plagues to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites. The seventh plague, hail, is described in Exodus 9:23-24 : "So Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and lightning struck the earth. So the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt. The hail fell and lightning continued flashing through it. It was the worst storm in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation."

3. Elijah and the Drought: In 1 Kings 17, Elijah proclaims a drought as a sign of God's judgment on Israel for their idolatry. 1 Kings 17:1 records, "Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, 'As surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there will be neither dew nor rain in these years except at my word.'"

Prophetic Signs

1. Signs of the End Times: Jesus speaks of weather as a sign of the end times in the Gospels. In Matthew 24:7 , He warns, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places." These natural phenomena are presented as precursors to the coming of the Son of Man.

2. The Red Sky: Jesus also uses weather patterns to illustrate spiritual discernment. In Matthew 16:2-3 , He says, "When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times."

God's Sovereignty Over Weather

1. Job's Discourse: The book of Job contains profound reflections on God's control over weather. Job 37:5-6 declares, "God thunders wondrously with His voice; He does great things we cannot comprehend. For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the gentle rain, ‘Pour out a mighty downpour.’"

2. Psalmist's Praise: The Psalms frequently acknowledge God's authority over the elements. Psalm 147:15-18 praises, "He sends forth His command to the earth; His word runs swiftly. He spreads the snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes; He hurls down His hail like pebbles. Who can withstand His icy blast? He sends forth His word and melts them; He unleashes His winds, and the waters flow."

Conclusion

Throughout the Bible, weather serves as a powerful symbol of God's communication, judgment, and sovereignty. These signs remind believers of the divine orchestration of the natural world and the importance of heeding God's messages through His creation.
