God commands him in Joshua 1:9 , "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." This assurance of God's presence is a recurring source of courage for God's people.

David, before becoming king, also exemplifies courage in his encounter with Goliath. In 1 Samuel 17:45 , David declares to the Philistine giant, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."
