Obedience to God: Punishment of Refusing
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms
Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of obedience to God is a central theme throughout the Bible, and the consequences of refusing to obey are clearly outlined in various passages. The Bible emphasizes that disobedience to God's commands leads to divine punishment, which serves as a corrective measure and a demonstration of God's justice and holiness.

Old Testament Examples

1. Adam and Eve: The first instance of disobedience is found in Genesis 3, where Adam and Eve eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, directly defying God's command. As a result, they face expulsion from the Garden of Eden, the introduction of sin into the world, and the eventual reality of death. Genesis 3:17-19 states, "To Adam He said, 'Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.'"

2. The Israelites in the Wilderness: The Israelites' journey from Egypt to the Promised Land is marked by repeated acts of disobedience. In Numbers 14, when the Israelites refuse to enter the Promised Land out of fear, God decrees that the entire generation will die in the wilderness, except for Joshua and Caleb. Numbers 14:22-23 records, "Not one of the men who have seen My glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tested Me and disobeyed Me these ten times—not one will ever see the land I swore to give their fathers."

3. King Saul: Saul, the first king of Israel, loses his kingdom due to disobedience. In 1 Samuel 15, Saul fails to completely destroy the Amalekites and their possessions as God commanded. As a result, God rejects Saul as king. 1 Samuel 15:23 declares, "For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance is like the wickedness of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king."

New Testament Teachings

1. Jesus' Warnings: Jesus frequently warns of the consequences of disobedience. In Matthew 7:21-23 , He states, "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!'"

2. The Parable of the Tenants: In Matthew 21:33-46, Jesus tells the parable of the tenants, illustrating the severe consequences for those who reject God's messengers and ultimately His Son. The tenants' refusal to obey results in their destruction and the vineyard being given to others.

3. Ananias and Sapphira: In Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira face immediate punishment for lying to the Holy Spirit about the proceeds from the sale of their property. Their disobedience results in their deaths, serving as a stark warning to the early church about the seriousness of sin.

Theological Implications

The punishment for disobedience underscores the holiness and righteousness of God. It serves as a reminder that God’s commands are not arbitrary but are given for the well-being of His people. Disobedience disrupts the relationship between God and humanity, necessitating divine intervention to restore order and justice. The Bible consistently calls believers to a life of obedience, promising blessings for those who follow God's ways and warning of consequences for those who refuse.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: to whom the LORD swore that he would not show them the land, which the LORD swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
