Pahathmoab is a significant name found within the genealogical and historical records of the Old Testament, particularly in the post-exilic period. The name "Pahathmoab" translates to "Governor of Moab," indicating a possible ancestral connection or administrative role related to the region of Moab. This name appears primarily in the context of the return from the Babylonian exile and the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

Biblical References:

1. Ezra 2:6; Nehemiah 7:11 · Pahathmoab is listed among the families or clans that returned from the Babylonian exile with Zerubbabel. In Ezra 2:6 , it states, "the descendants of Pahath-moab, through the line of Jeshua and Joab, 2,812." Similarly, Nehemiah 7:11 records, "the descendants of Pahath-moab, through the line of Jeshua and Joab, 2,818." These passages highlight the significant number of returnees from this family, indicating their prominence and possibly their leadership role in the restoration efforts.

2. Nehemiah 3:11 · During the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem, members of the Pahathmoab family were actively involved. Nehemiah 3:11 notes, "Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-moab repaired another section, as well as the Tower of the Ovens." This involvement underscores their commitment to the physical and spiritual restoration of the city.

3. Ezra 8:4 · In the account of those who returned with Ezra, the family of Pahathmoab is again mentioned. Ezra 8:4 lists, "of the descendants of Pahath-moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men." This reference further emphasizes the ongoing participation of this family in the community's religious and social life.

4. Nehemiah 10:14 · The family of Pahathmoab is also noted in the covenant renewal ceremony led by Nehemiah. Nehemiah 10:14 includes, "The leaders of the people: Parosh, Pahath-moab, Elam, Zattu, Bani." This indicates their role in the spiritual renewal and commitment to the Law of God, as they were among those who sealed the covenant.

Historical and Theological Significance:

The repeated mention of Pahathmoab in the post-exilic records suggests a family of considerable influence and responsibility. Their involvement in the return from exile, the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, and the covenant renewal highlights their dedication to the restoration of Israel both physically and spiritually. The name itself, "Governor of Moab," may reflect a historical connection to the region of Moab, possibly indicating a role of leadership or governance in that area during earlier periods.

From a theological perspective, the inclusion of Pahathmoab in these records serves as a testament to God's faithfulness in preserving His people and fulfilling His promises. The return from exile and the rebuilding efforts were seen as acts of divine providence, with families like Pahathmoab playing crucial roles in the unfolding of God's redemptive plan for Israel. Their account is a reminder of the importance of faithfulness and leadership in the community of God's people.

Pahathmoab

(governor of Moab), head of one of the chief houses of the tribe of Judah. Of the individual or the occasion of his receiving so singular a name nothing is known certainty but as we read in (1 Chronicles 4:22) of a family of Shilonites, of the tribe of Judah, who in very early times "had dominion in Moab," it may be conjectured that this was the origin of the name.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Governor of Moab, a person whose descendants returned from the Captivity and assisted in rebuilding Jerusalem (Ezra 2:6; 8:4; 10:30).

PAHATH-MOAB

pa'-hath-mo'-ab (pachath mo'abh, "sheik of Moab"; in I Esdras 5:11; 8:31, "Phaath Moab"): A Jewish clan probably named after an ancestor of the above title. Part of the clan returned with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:6; compare Nehemiah 7:11) under two family names, Jeshua and Joab; and a part came back with Ezra (Ezra 8:4). Hashub, a "son of Pahath-moab," is named among the repairers of both the wall and the "tower of the furnaces" at Jerusalem (Nehemiah 3:11). It is the name of one of the signatories "sealing" the "sure covenant" of Nehemiah 9:38 (Nehemiah 10:14). Some of the sons of this name had taken "strange wives" (Ezra 10:30)
