Principle of Release

The Principle of Release is a biblical concept rooted in the laws and teachings of the Old Testament, particularly within the context of the Mosaic Law. It encompasses the ideas of forgiveness, liberation, and the relinquishment of debts and servitude, reflecting God's mercy and justice. This principle is primarily illustrated through the Sabbatical Year and the Year of Jubilee, which were instituted by God for the Israelites.

Sabbatical Year

The Sabbatical Year, also known as the "Shemitah," is a year of rest observed every seventh year, as commanded in the Law of Moses. During this year, the land was to lie fallow, and agricultural activity was to cease, allowing the land to rest. This practice is outlined in Leviticus 25:3-4: "For six years you may sow your fields and prune your vineyards and gather their crops. But in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land—a Sabbath to the LORD. You are not to sow your field or prune your vineyard."

In addition to agricultural rest, the Sabbatical Year also included the release of debts. Deuteronomy 15:1-2 states, "At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelite. He shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother, because the LORD’s time of release has been proclaimed." This release of debts served as a reminder of God's provision and the importance of mercy and compassion within the community.

Year of Jubilee

The Year of Jubilee, occurring every fiftieth year, expanded upon the principles of the Sabbatical Year. It was a time of liberation and restoration, as described in Leviticus 25:10: "And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his clan."

During the Jubilee, not only were debts forgiven, but land that had been sold was to be returned to its original owner, and those who had become indentured servants were to be set free. This ensured that economic disparities did not become permanent and that families could regain their ancestral inheritance. The Jubilee underscored the belief that the land ultimately belonged to God and that the Israelites were merely stewards of His creation.

Spiritual Implications

The Principle of Release carries significant spiritual implications, emphasizing themes of redemption, freedom, and divine grace. It foreshadows the ultimate release from sin and spiritual bondage through Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus proclaims His mission in terms reminiscent of the Jubilee in Luke 4:18-19, quoting Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."

The Principle of Release serves as a powerful reminder of God's desire for His people to live in freedom, both physically and spiritually, and to extend that freedom to others through acts of mercy, forgiveness, and justice.
