Regular Giving

Topical Encyclopedia
Regular giving, as a biblical principle, is deeply rooted in the teachings of both the Old and New Testaments. It encompasses the practice of consistently offering a portion of one's resources—be it time, money, or goods—to support the work of God, the church, and those in need. This practice is seen as an act of worship, obedience, and stewardship, reflecting the believer's gratitude and trust in God's provision.

Old Testament Foundations

The concept of regular giving is first established in the Old Testament through the practice of tithing. The tithe, which means "a tenth," was instituted as a commandment for the Israelites to give a tenth of their produce and livestock to support the Levitical priesthood and the work of the Tabernacle. Leviticus 27:30 states, "A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD."

In addition to tithes, the Israelites were also instructed to give offerings and alms. Deuteronomy 15:10-11 encourages generosity towards the poor: "Give generously to him, and do not let your heart be grieved when you do so. And because of this, the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land."

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament expands on the principle of regular giving, emphasizing the spirit of generosity and the attitude of the heart. Jesus commended sacrificial giving, as seen in the account of the widow's offering in Mark 12:41-44. The Apostle Paul further elaborates on this in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, where he writes, "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver."

Paul also instructed the early church to set aside a portion of their income regularly to support the needs of the church and its mission. In 1 Corinthians 16:2, he advises, "On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a portion of your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will be needed."

Purpose and Impact

Regular giving serves multiple purposes within the Christian faith. It supports the ministry and mission of the church, aids those in need, and fosters a sense of community and mutual care among believers. It is also a tangible expression of faith, acknowledging God's sovereignty over all resources and His promise to provide for His people.

Moreover, regular giving is seen as a means of spiritual growth and maturity. It encourages believers to prioritize God's kingdom over material wealth and to develop a heart of generosity and compassion. As Jesus taught in Matthew 6:19-21, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Conclusion

While the Bible provides guidelines and principles for regular giving, it ultimately calls believers to give willingly and joyfully, reflecting the grace and generosity of God Himself. Through regular giving, Christians participate in the work of the Gospel, support their communities, and demonstrate their trust in God's provision and faithfulness.
