The term "rewardeth" is an archaic form of the verb "reward," which appears in various contexts throughout the Bible, signifying the act of giving recompense or compensation for actions, whether good or evil. In the biblical narrative, the concept of reward is closely tied to God's justice, righteousness, and faithfulness. The Berean Standard Bible provides several instances where this concept is explored, emphasizing both divine and human aspects of reward.

Divine Reward

God is often depicted as the ultimate rewarder, who sees and judges the actions of individuals. In Hebrews 11:6 , it is stated, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." This passage highlights the necessity of faith and the assurance that God rewards those who diligently pursue Him.

The Psalms frequently speak of God's rewarding nature. Psalm 18:20 declares, "The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands." Here, the psalmist acknowledges that God rewards individuals based on their righteousness and moral integrity.

Human Actions and Rewards

The Bible also addresses the human responsibility in seeking rewards through righteous living. In Matthew 6:1 , Jesus warns, "Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven." This teaching underscores the importance of sincerity in one's actions, as true rewards come from God rather than human recognition.

Furthermore, the concept of reward is not limited to the present life but extends into eternity. In Matthew 5:12 , Jesus encourages those who are persecuted for righteousness, saying, "Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you." This promise of heavenly reward serves as a motivation for enduring trials and living a life of faithfulness.

Consequences of Wickedness

Conversely, the Bible also speaks of negative rewards or consequences for wickedness. Proverbs 11:18 states, "The wicked man earns an empty wage, but he who sows righteousness reaps a true reward." This proverb contrasts the fleeting and ultimately unsatisfying rewards of wickedness with the enduring and genuine rewards of righteousness.

In Revelation 22:12 , the eschatological aspect of reward is emphasized: "Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done." This passage reflects the final judgment, where Christ will reward each person based on their deeds, underscoring the eternal significance of one's actions.

Conclusion

The biblical concept of "rewardeth" encompasses both the immediate and eternal consequences of human actions, reflecting God's justice and faithfulness. It serves as a powerful motivator for righteous living and a sobering reminder of the ultimate accountability before God.
