Saphatias is a name found in the Old Testament, associated with several individuals. The name Saphatias is derived from the Hebrew "Shephatiah," meaning "Yahweh has judged" or "Yahweh is judge." This name reflects the theocentric worldview of the Israelites, emphasizing God's sovereignty and justice.

1. Shephatiah, Son of David: One of the sons of King David, Shephatiah was born to David's wife Abital. He is listed among David's sons in 2 Samuel 3:4 and 1 Chronicles 3:3. His mention in the genealogies underscores the importance of David's lineage in the history of Israel, as David's descendants played significant roles in the nation's history.

2. Shephatiah, Son of Maachah: This Shephatiah was one of the leaders of the tribe of Simeon during the reign of King David. He is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 27:16, where he is noted as the leader of the Simeonites. His role as a leader highlights the tribal organization of Israel during the united monarchy.

3. Shephatiah, Son of Mattan: In the time of the prophet Jeremiah, Shephatiah son of Mattan was one of the officials who opposed Jeremiah. He is mentioned in Jeremiah 38:1-4, where he, along with others, accused Jeremiah of demoralizing the soldiers and the people by prophesying the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. Their opposition to Jeremiah's message reflects the tension between the prophetic word and the political realities of the time.

4. Shephatiah, Son of Mahalalel: This Shephatiah is listed among the descendants of Judah in 1 Chronicles 9:8. His inclusion in the genealogical records serves to trace the lineage and heritage of the tribe of Judah, which held a place of prominence in Israel's history, particularly as the tribe from which King David and ultimately Jesus Christ descended.

5. Shephatiah, Son of Reuel: Mentioned in Ezra 8:8, this Shephatiah was one of the leaders who returned with Ezra from the Babylonian exile. His participation in the return to Jerusalem signifies the fulfillment of God's promise to restore His people to their land, a pivotal moment in Jewish history that set the stage for the rebuilding of the temple and the reestablishment of worship in Jerusalem.

6. Shephatiah, Son of Jehoshaphat: In 2 Chronicles 21:2, Shephatiah is listed as one of the sons of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. His mention in the context of Jehoshaphat's family highlights the dynastic continuity of the Davidic line, which was central to the hope of a future messianic king.

The various individuals named Shephatiah in the Old Testament illustrate the diverse roles and contexts in which this name appears, from royal lineage to tribal leadership, and from opposition to prophetic ministry to participation in the restoration of Israel. Each mention contributes to the rich tapestry of Israel's history and God's unfolding plan for His people.

SAPHATIAS

saf-a-ti'-as (Saphatias, Codex Vaticanus Sophotias; omitted in Codex Alexandrinus): Name of a family of returning exiles (1 Esdras 8:34) = "Shephatiah" in Ezra 8:8. If Saphatias (1 Esdras 8:34) = Saphat (1 Esdras 5:9), as would appear, then part of the family went up with Zerubbabel and part with Ezra.
