The sin offering, as detailed in the Old Testament, is a crucial component of the sacrificial system instituted by God for the Israelites. It is primarily described in the book of Leviticus and serves as a means for atonement for unintentional sins, allowing the people to maintain a right relationship with God. The Hebrew term for sin offering is "chattat," which signifies both the sin and the offering made to atone for it.

Biblical Foundation

The sin offering is first introduced in Leviticus 4, where God provides Moses with detailed instructions on how the Israelites are to present their offerings. The offering is required for various individuals and groups, including the anointed priest, the whole congregation, a leader, and a common person, each with specific instructions on the type of animal to be sacrificed.

Leviticus 4:3-4 states, "If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the LORD a young bull without blemish as a sin offering for the sin he has committed. He is to present the bull at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD, lay his hand on its head, and slaughter it before the LORD."

Purpose and Procedure

The primary purpose of the sin offering is to atone for unintentional sins and to cleanse the sanctuary from the impurity brought about by sin. The offering underscores the seriousness of sin and the need for purification. The procedure involves the sinner laying hands on the animal, symbolically transferring their sin to the offering, which is then slaughtered. The blood of the sacrifice is a critical element, as it is sprinkled on the altar and other sacred objects to purify them.

Leviticus 4:20 explains, "He shall do with this bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering; he shall do the same with it. Thus the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven."

Types of Sin Offerings

Different types of animals are prescribed for different categories of people:

1. Anointed Priest: A young bull without blemish (Leviticus 4:3).
2. Whole Congregation: A young bull (Leviticus 4:13-14).
3. Leader: A male goat without blemish (Leviticus 4:22-23).
4. Common Person: A female goat or lamb without blemish (Leviticus 4:27-28, 32).

In cases of poverty, two turtledoves or two young pigeons, or even a tenth of an ephah of fine flour, could be offered (Leviticus 5:7, 11).

Theological Significance

The sin offering highlights the holiness of God and the gravity of sin. It serves as a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who, according to the New Testament, is the fulfillment of the sacrificial system. Hebrews 10:12 states, "But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God."

The sin offering, therefore, is not only a ritualistic practice but also a profound theological statement about the need for atonement and the provision of God's grace through sacrifice. It points to the ultimate redemption found in Christ, who is the perfect and final sin offering for humanity.

(Hebrews hattath), the law of, is given in detail in Leviticus 4-6:13; 9:7-11, 22-24; 12:6-8; 15:2, 14, 25-30; 14:19, 31; Numbers 6:10-14. On the day of Atonement it was made with special solemnity (Leviticus 16:5, 11, 15). The blood was then carried into the holy of holies and sprinkled on the mercy-seat. Sin-offerings were also presented at the five annual festivals (Numbers 28, 29), and on the occasion of the consecration of the priests (Exodus 29:10-14, 36). As each individual, even the most private member of the congregation, as well as the congregation at large, and the high priest, was obliged, on being convicted by his conscience of any particular sin, to come with a sin-offering, we see thus impressively disclosed the need in which every sinner stands of the salvation of Christ, and the necessity of making application to it as often as the guilt of sin renews itself upon his conscience. This resort of faith to the perfect sacrifice of Christ is the one way that lies open for the sinner's attainment of pardon and restoration to peace. And then in the sacrifice itself there is the reality of that incomparable worth and preciousness which were so significantly represented in the sin-offering by the sacredness of its blood and the hallowed destination of its flesh. With reference to this the blood of Christ is called emphatically "the precious blood," and the blood that "cleanseth from all sin" (1 John 1:7).
