Total Consecration

Topical Encyclopedia
Total Consecration refers to the complete and unwavering dedication of oneself to God, encompassing all aspects of life—spiritual, physical, emotional, and material. This concept is deeply rooted in biblical teachings and is exemplified by the lives of various biblical figures who wholly devoted themselves to the service and worship of God.

Biblical Foundation

The idea of consecration is prevalent throughout the Bible, where individuals and objects are set apart for God's purposes. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "qadash" is often used to denote being set apart or made holy. In the New Testament, the Greek word "hagios" carries a similar meaning.

One of the earliest examples of consecration is found in the life of Abraham, who was called by God to leave his homeland and follow Him to an unknown land (Genesis 12:1-4). Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac at God's command (Genesis 22:1-18) further illustrates his total consecration to God.

In the New Testament, the call to total consecration is echoed in the teachings of Jesus Christ. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus instructs His followers to "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Matthew 6:33). This directive emphasizes the priority of God's kingdom over all earthly concerns.

The Apostle Paul also speaks to the concept of total consecration in his epistles. In Romans 12:1, he urges believers to "offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship" . This passage highlights the call for believers to dedicate their entire being to God as an act of worship.

Examples of Total Consecration

1. Samuel: Dedicated to God from birth, Samuel served as a prophet and judge over Israel. His life was marked by obedience and devotion to God's will (1 Samuel 1:27-28; 3:19-21).

2. David: Known as a man after God's own heart, David's life was characterized by his deep love for God and his desire to fulfill God's purposes (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22).

3. Mary, the Mother of Jesus: Mary's response to the angel Gabriel, "I am the Lord's servant. May it happen to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38), exemplifies her total submission and consecration to God's plan.

4. The Apostles: After the resurrection of Jesus, the apostles demonstrated total consecration by spreading the Gospel despite persecution and hardship (Acts 4:19-20; 5:29).

Practical Implications

Total consecration involves a daily commitment to live according to God's will and purposes. It requires believers to surrender their personal desires, ambitions, and possessions to God, trusting in His provision and guidance. This dedication is not a one-time event but a continual process of growth and transformation through the Holy Spirit.

Believers are encouraged to engage in spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and studying Scripture to deepen their relationship with God and align their lives with His will. Total consecration also involves serving others and participating in the life of the church, reflecting the love and grace of Christ to the world.

Challenges and Rewards

While total consecration may present challenges, such as the sacrifice of personal desires and facing opposition from the world, it also offers profound rewards. Believers experience a deeper intimacy with God, a sense of purpose, and the peace that comes from living in alignment with God's will. The promise of eternal life and the hope of sharing in Christ's glory provide motivation and encouragement for those who commit to a life of total consecration.
