Man: God: Enables to Speak

The ability of God to enable individuals to speak is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, demonstrating His sovereign power and purpose in using human voices to convey His divine message. This divine enablement is often seen in the context of prophecy, leadership, and the proclamation of God's will.

Moses and Aaron

One of the most prominent examples is Moses, who expressed his own inadequacy in speech when called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. In Exodus 4:10-12 , Moses said to the LORD, "Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent—neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant—for I am slow of speech and tongue." The LORD responded, "Who gave man his mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, sighted or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach you what to say." Here, God reassures Moses that He will enable him to speak, emphasizing that the ability to communicate effectively is a gift from God.

Prophets

The prophets of the Old Testament were often called to speak on behalf of God, delivering messages of warning, hope, and instruction. Jeremiah, for instance, initially protested his calling by saying, "Ah, Lord GOD! I do not know how to speak, for I am only a child!" (Jeremiah 1:6). Yet, God assured him, "Do not say, ‘I am only a child,’ for to everyone I send you, you must go, and all that I command you, you must speak" (Jeremiah 1:7). God then touched Jeremiah's mouth and said, "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth" (Jeremiah 1:9), signifying divine empowerment to speak His words.

New Testament Apostles

In the New Testament, the apostles were also empowered by God to speak boldly. After the resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles at Pentecost, enabling them to speak in various tongues and proclaim the gospel to people from different nations (Acts 2:4). This event marked a significant moment where God enabled His followers to communicate His message across language barriers, fulfilling the prophecy of Joel that God would pour out His Spirit on all people (Joel 2:28-29).

Paul's Ministry

The Apostle Paul frequently acknowledged that his ability to preach and teach was not due to his own eloquence or wisdom, but through the power of God. In 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 , Paul states, "My message and my preaching were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith would not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power." This underscores the belief that God enables His servants to speak effectively, ensuring that the focus remains on His power rather than human ability.

General Principle

Throughout Scripture, the principle that God enables individuals to speak is evident. Whether through direct intervention, as with Moses and the prophets, or through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, as seen in the New Testament, God equips His chosen messengers to communicate His truth. This divine enablement serves to fulfill His purposes and advance His kingdom, demonstrating that human limitations are no barrier to the accomplishment of His will.
