The Midianites, descendants of Midian, a son of Abraham by Keturah (Genesis 25:1-2), play a significant role in the biblical narrative, particularly in their interactions with the Israelites. The Midianites were a nomadic people, often associated with the region east of the Jordan River and the Sinai Peninsula. Their relationship with Israel is complex, marked by both kinship and conflict.

One of the most notable episodes involving the Midianites is their alliance with the Moabites against Israel, as recorded in the Book of Numbers. This alliance was orchestrated by Balak, the king of Moab, who was alarmed by the presence and power of the Israelites as they journeyed toward the Promised Land. Fearing that Israel would consume the land, Balak sought to weaken them through spiritual means.

Balak enlisted the help of Balaam, a prophet known for his ability to bless and curse. The narrative unfolds in Numbers 22-24, where Balak sends messengers to Balaam, urging him to curse Israel. Despite Balak's persistence and the promise of great reward, Balaam is ultimately unable to curse the Israelites, as God intervenes, turning the intended curses into blessings.

Following Balaam's failure to curse Israel, the Midianites, in conjunction with the Moabites, resort to a different strategy. They entice the Israelites into idolatry and immorality, leading to a grave sin against God. Numbers 25:1-3 describes this incident: "While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab, who invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods. So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the LORD’s anger burned against them."

This act of seduction and idolatry resulted in a severe divine judgment upon Israel, with a plague that claimed the lives of 24,000 Israelites (Numbers 25:9). In response to this transgression, God commanded Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites. Numbers 25:16-18 states, "The LORD said to Moses, 'Treat the Midianites as enemies and strike them, for they treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.'"

The subsequent campaign against the Midianites is detailed in Numbers 31, where the Israelites, under Moses' leadership, execute God's judgment. The campaign results in the defeat of the Midianite kings and the death of Balaam, who had counseled the Midianites and Moabites in their plot against Israel (Numbers 31:8).

The Midianite episode serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of idolatry and the consequences of turning away from God. It highlights the spiritual warfare that Israel faced and underscores the importance of faithfulness to God's commandments. The alliance between Moab and Midian against Israel is a testament to the persistent opposition that God's people encountered on their journey to the Promised Land.

And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
