Scorning and Mocking: Heathen

In the biblical context, scorning and mocking are often associated with the behavior of the heathen—those who do not acknowledge the God of Israel. These actions are depicted as expressions of contempt and derision, often directed towards God, His people, and His commandments. The Bible provides numerous instances where heathen nations and individuals engage in such behavior, highlighting the spiritual and moral divide between the followers of God and those who reject Him.

Old Testament Instances

The Old Testament frequently portrays heathen nations as scorners and mockers of God and His people. In 2 Kings 19:22, the prophet Isaiah, speaking to King Hezekiah, relays God's message to the Assyrian king Sennacherib: "Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!" This passage illustrates the arrogance and disdain of the Assyrians, who mocked the God of Israel, believing their military might could overpower divine protection.

Similarly, in Psalm 79:4, the psalmist laments the scorn and derision faced by Israel at the hands of surrounding nations: "We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those around us." This verse reflects the humiliation and ridicule that God's people endured from heathen nations, often as a result of their own disobedience and subsequent divine judgment.

Prophetic Warnings

The prophets frequently warned of the consequences of scorning and mocking God. In Proverbs 3:34, it is written, "He mocks the mockers, but gives grace to the humble." This proverb underscores the divine response to scorn: God Himself will mock those who mock Him, while extending grace to those who approach Him with humility. The prophetic literature often emphasizes that such behavior will not go unpunished, as seen in Isaiah 28:22: "Now therefore, do not scoff, or your shackles will be made stronger; for I have heard from the Lord GOD of Hosts a destruction decreed against the whole land."

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, the theme of scorning and mocking continues, particularly in the context of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Gospels recount how Roman soldiers and Jewish leaders mocked Jesus during His trial and crucifixion. In Matthew 27:29-31, the soldiers "twisted together a crown of thorns, set it on His head, and put a staff in His right hand. And they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly."

This mockery of Christ is seen as the ultimate expression of human rebellion against God, yet it also fulfills the prophetic scriptures and serves as a pivotal moment in the redemptive plan of God. The Apostle Paul, in Galatians 6:7, warns believers, "Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return." This serves as a reminder that mocking God is a serious offense with eternal consequences.

Heathen Behavior and Christian Response

The Bible instructs believers to respond to scorn and mockery with patience and faithfulness. In 1 Peter 3:16, Christians are encouraged to maintain a clear conscience, "so that those who slander you may be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ." This reflects the call to live righteously, even in the face of ridicule, trusting that God will ultimately vindicate His people.

Throughout Scripture, the behavior of the heathen serves as a cautionary tale for believers, illustrating the futility and danger of scorning and mocking the divine. The biblical narrative consistently affirms that while the heathen may mock, God's sovereignty and justice will prevail.
