So now, do not mock
This phrase serves as a warning to the people of Israel, urging them to cease their scornful attitude towards God's messages and messengers. Mockery in this context reflects a hardened heart and a refusal to heed divine warnings. In biblical history, mockery of God's prophets often preceded judgment, as seen in the reactions to prophets like Jeremiah and Ezekiel. The call to stop mocking is a call to repentance and humility before God.

or your shackles will become heavier
The imagery of shackles suggests bondage and oppression, which can be both literal and spiritual. Historically, Israel faced physical captivity due to their disobedience, such as the Babylonian exile. Spiritually, heavier shackles symbolize the increasing burden of sin and its consequences. This phrase warns that continued rebellion will lead to greater judgment and suffering, aligning with the biblical principle that sin leads to bondage (John 8:34).

Indeed, I have heard from the Lord GOD of Hosts
This statement emphasizes the authority and certainty of the message. The title "Lord GOD of Hosts" underscores God's sovereignty and power over all heavenly and earthly armies. It assures the audience that the warning is not from a human source but from the divine ruler of the universe. This divine authority is a common theme in prophetic literature, reinforcing the seriousness of the message.

a decree of destruction against the whole land
The decree of destruction indicates a comprehensive judgment that will affect the entire nation. Historically, this can be linked to the Assyrian and Babylonian invasions, which brought widespread devastation to Israel and Judah. Theologically, it reflects the consequences of national sin and covenant unfaithfulness. This phrase also foreshadows the ultimate judgment and purification that will come at the end of the age, as seen in eschatological passages like Revelation 19.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Isaiah
The prophet who conveyed God's messages to the people of Judah and Jerusalem. He warned them of impending judgment due to their disobedience and mockery.

2. The Lord GOD of Hosts
A title emphasizing God's supreme authority and power over all heavenly armies, underscoring His ability to execute judgment.

3. The Whole Land
Refers to the land of Judah and possibly the broader region, indicating that the judgment would be widespread due to the people's collective sin.

4. Mockers
The people of Judah who ridiculed God's warnings and continued in their sinful ways, leading to heavier consequences.

5. Decree of Destruction
The divine judgment pronounced by God, highlighting the seriousness of the people's rebellion and the certainty of its fulfillment.
Teaching Points
The Danger of Mockery
Mocking God's word and warnings leads to increased judgment. We must take God's messages seriously and respond with repentance and humility.

The Certainty of God's Judgment
God's decrees are sure and will come to pass. We should live with an awareness of His justice and align our lives accordingly.

The Power of God
As the Lord GOD of Hosts, God's power is unmatched. Recognizing His authority should lead us to reverence and obedience.

The Call to Repentance
Even in the face of judgment, there is an implicit call to turn from sin. Repentance can change the course of our lives and avert disaster.

Living in Humility
Humility invites God's grace, while pride and mockery lead to downfall. We should cultivate a humble heart before God and others.(22) Now therefore be ye not mockers . . .--The rulers are warned that the scorn in which they indulge so freely will only make the fetters which already gall them tighter and heavier. In the words that follow the prophet reproduces his own language in Isaiah 10:23 (where see Notes), probably because they had been singled out as a special subject for derision.

Verse 22. - Be ye not mockers. As they had shown themselves previously (vers. 9, 10). Lest your bands be made strong; or, lest your fetters grow strong. The prophet views Judah as still, to some extent, an Assyrian dependency, held in light bonds; and warns his countrymen that an attempt to break the light bonds may result in Assyria's making them stronger and heavier. A consumption... determined upon the whole earth; rather, a consummation (comp. Isaiah 10:22, 23).
