Trust of the Wicked: Israelites

The concept of trust, particularly the misplaced trust of the wicked, is a recurring theme in the biblical narrative concerning the Israelites. Throughout the Old Testament, the Israelites are depicted as a people chosen by God, yet frequently struggling with faithfulness and trust in Him. This struggle often leads them to place their trust in other nations, idols, and their own understanding, which the Bible consistently portrays as folly and wickedness.

Trust in Idols and Foreign Alliances

One of the most prominent examples of misplaced trust among the Israelites is their recurrent inclination to rely on idols and foreign alliances instead of God. The prophet Isaiah addresses this issue, warning the Israelites of the futility of trusting in idols and foreign powers. In Isaiah 31:1 , it is written, "Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the abundance of chariots and in the great strength of horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek the LORD!" This passage highlights the Israelites' tendency to seek security in military might and political alliances rather than in God.

The narrative of the golden calf in Exodus 32 is another poignant example. While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Law, the Israelites grew impatient and demanded Aaron make them an idol. This act of idolatry was a direct violation of their covenant with God and demonstrated their lack of trust in His provision and timing.

Consequences of Misplaced Trust

The Bible records numerous consequences for the Israelites' misplaced trust. In Jeremiah 17:5-6 , the prophet declares, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD. He will be like a shrub in the desert; he will not see when prosperity comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives." This curse illustrates the spiritual barrenness and desolation that result from trusting in human strength and wisdom rather than in God.

The historical books of the Old Testament, such as Kings and Chronicles, recount the downfall of both the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah due to their persistent idolatry and alliances with pagan nations. These narratives serve as a testament to the destructive outcomes of the Israelites' failure to trust in God alone.

Prophetic Calls to Return to Trust in God

Despite the Israelites' frequent lapses, the prophets continually called them back to a place of trust in God. Hosea 14:1-2 urges, "Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have stumbled by your iniquity. Bring your confessions and return to the LORD. Say to Him, 'Forgive all our iniquity and accept what is good, so that we may repay You with the fruit of our lips.'" This call to repentance underscores the possibility of restoration and blessing if the Israelites would turn from their wicked ways and place their trust in God.

The Psalms also reflect this theme, offering both a critique of misplaced trust and a model for proper reliance on God. Psalm 20:7 states, "Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God." This verse contrasts the folly of trusting in military power with the wisdom of trusting in God's name and character.

Conclusion

The biblical narrative concerning the Israelites serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of misplaced trust. Through their history, the Israelites demonstrate the consequences of turning away from God and the blessings that come from returning to Him in faith and trust.
