Vineyards: Provided With the Apparatus for Making Wine

Vineyards hold a significant place in biblical narratives, symbolizing abundance, blessing, and the fruitfulness of the land. The cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine are recurrent themes throughout the Scriptures, reflecting both the agricultural practices and the cultural importance of wine in ancient Israelite society.

Biblical References and Symbolism

The Bible frequently mentions vineyards as a sign of prosperity and divine favor. In the Promised Land, vineyards were part of the inheritance given to the Israelites, representing the fulfillment of God's promises. In Deuteronomy 6:10-11 , God assures the Israelites of a land "with great and splendid cities that you did not build, and houses full of every good thing that you did not fill, and wells that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant."

Vineyards also serve as metaphors for Israel itself. In Isaiah 5:1-7 , the prophet Isaiah presents a parable of a vineyard, where God is the owner who lovingly tends to His vineyard, Israel, expecting it to yield good grapes but finding only wild ones. This imagery underscores themes of judgment and the expectation of righteousness.

Apparatus for Wine Production

The process of making wine in biblical times involved several steps, each requiring specific tools and facilities. The vineyard itself was meticulously maintained, with vines pruned and supported by trellises or stakes. Harvesting was a communal activity, often celebrated with joy, as seen in Isaiah 16:10 : "Joy and gladness are taken away from the fruitful field; no songs are sung, no shouts are raised, no treader treads out wine in the presses; I have put an end to the shouting."

Once harvested, grapes were taken to a winepress, a crucial apparatus in the winemaking process. The winepress typically consisted of two parts: an upper vat where grapes were trodden by foot, and a lower vat where the juice collected. This setup is vividly described in Joel 3:13 : "Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full; the vats overflow—because their wickedness is great."

The juice was then stored in large jars or wineskins for fermentation. The importance of proper storage is highlighted in Matthew 9:17 , where Jesus teaches, "Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will spill and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."

Cultural and Religious Significance

Wine held a central role in the daily life and religious practices of the Israelites. It was a staple of the diet, a symbol of joy and celebration, and an integral part of religious offerings. In the New Testament, wine gains further significance through its use in the Last Supper, where Jesus institutes the sacrament of Communion, saying in Matthew 26:27-28 , "Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'"

The vineyard, with its apparatus for making wine, thus serves as a rich symbol in the biblical narrative, embodying themes of blessing, judgment, and redemption.

Isaiah 5:2
And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the middle of it, and also made a wine press therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and dig a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to farmers, and went into a far country:
