Uphaz is a term mentioned in the Bible, specifically in the Old Testament, and is often associated with gold. The exact location or identity of Uphaz is not definitively known, but it is traditionally considered to be a region or place renowned for its fine gold. The mention of Uphaz occurs in the context of describing the quality and value of gold, suggesting its significance in ancient times.

Biblical References:

1. Jeremiah 10:9 : "Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz—the work of a craftsman and of the hands of a goldsmith. Their clothing is blue and purple, all fashioned by skilled workers."

2. Daniel 10:5 : "I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist."

In these passages, Uphaz is mentioned alongside other well-known locations such as Tarshish, indicating its importance in the trade and craftsmanship of precious metals. The gold from Uphaz is described as being of high quality, used in the adornment of significant figures and objects.

Historical and Geographical Considerations:

The precise location of Uphaz remains a subject of debate among scholars and theologians. Some suggest that Uphaz might be a variant of the name Ophir, another biblical location famous for its gold. Others propose that Uphaz could be a region in Arabia or India, known for its rich gold deposits. The lack of concrete archaeological evidence leaves the exact identification of Uphaz open to interpretation.

Theological Significance:

In the biblical context, the mention of gold from Uphaz serves to emphasize the splendor and majesty associated with divine or royal figures. The use of such high-quality gold in the description of heavenly beings or sacred objects underscores the purity and value attributed to them. Uphaz, therefore, symbolizes not only material wealth but also spiritual richness and divine glory.

Cultural Context:

In ancient Near Eastern cultures, gold was a symbol of wealth, power, and divine favor. The reference to gold from Uphaz in the Bible reflects the broader cultural appreciation for precious metals and their role in religious and royal iconography. The craftsmanship associated with gold from Uphaz highlights the skill and artistry valued in ancient societies.

In summary, while the exact location of Uphaz remains uncertain, its biblical references highlight its association with high-quality gold, contributing to the imagery of wealth, splendor, and divine majesty in the Scriptures.

Uphaz

A region producing fine gold, Jeremiah 10:9 Daniel 10:5. In Hebrew it differs from Ophir by only one letter; and it is thought to denote the same region.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Probably another name for Ophir (Jeremiah 10:9). Some, however, regard it as the name of an Indian colony in Yemen, southern Arabia; others as a place on or near the river Hyphasis (now the Ghana), the south-eastern limit of the Punjaub.

UPHAZ

u'-faz ('uphaz): A gold-bearing region, mentioned in Jeremiah 10:9 Daniel 10:5, otherwise unknown. Perhaps in both passages Ophir, which differs in one consonant only, should be read. In the second passage, instead of "gold of Uphaz," perhaps "gold and fine gold" ('uphaz) should be read. The Jerusalem Talmud states that there were seven kinds of gold, good gold, pure, precious, gold of Uphaz, purified, refined, and red gold of Parvaim (2 Chronicles 3:6). That of Uphaz, which is so called from the place from which it comes, resembles "flashes of fire fed with pitch" (M. Schwab, The Talmud of Jerusalem, V, 207).
