The term "upheaved" is not directly found in the Berean Standard Bible , but the concept of upheaval is prevalent throughout the biblical narrative, often symbolizing divine intervention, judgment, or significant transformation. In Scripture, upheaval can refer to both physical and spiritual disturbances, reflecting God's sovereign power over creation and history.

Biblical Instances of Upheaval:

1. Creation and the Flood:
The initial act of creation itself can be seen as a divine upheaval, where God brings order out of chaos (Genesis 1:1-2). The Flood in Genesis 6-9 is a literal upheaval of the earth, where God judges the wickedness of humanity by covering the earth with water, sparing only Noah and his family. This event signifies a profound transformation and a new beginning for creation.

2. The Exodus:
The deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt is marked by a series of upheavals, including the ten plagues (Exodus 7-12). These plagues demonstrate God's power over nature and the false gods of Egypt, culminating in the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22), where the waters are upheaved to allow the Israelites to escape.

3. Mount Sinai:
At Mount Sinai, the giving of the Law is accompanied by a dramatic upheaval of the natural world. Exodus 19:18 describes the scene: "Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. The smoke rose like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently." This event underscores the holiness and majesty of God as He establishes His covenant with Israel.

4. Prophetic Imagery:
The prophets often use imagery of upheaval to describe God's judgment and the coming Day of the Lord. Isaiah 24:19-20 states, "The earth is utterly broken apart, the earth is split open, the earth is shaken violently. The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a hut. Its transgression weighs heavily upon it, and it will fall, never to rise again." Such language conveys the totality of God's judgment and the transformation that accompanies His intervention.

5. The Crucifixion and Resurrection:
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the ultimate spiritual upheavals. At the moment of Christ's death, Matthew 27:51 records, "At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, and the rocks were split." This physical upheaval signifies the breaking of the barrier between God and humanity, granting believers direct access to God through Christ.

6. The End Times:
The Book of Revelation is replete with imagery of cosmic upheaval as part of the eschatological events leading to the establishment of God's eternal kingdom. Revelation 6:12-14 describes a great earthquake, the sun turning black, and the stars falling from the sky, symbolizing the final judgment and the renewal of creation.

Theological Significance:

In the biblical context, upheaval is often a manifestation of God's direct action in the world, whether in judgment, deliverance, or the establishment of a new covenant. It serves as a reminder of God's ultimate authority over creation and history, His ability to bring about change, and His commitment to His redemptive purposes. Through upheaval, God reveals His power, justice, and mercy, calling His people to repentance, faith, and obedience.
